Second Chances
So here's a little bit about Enchanted Destiny.
Kat never believed she’d fall victim to her family’s stories about destined soul mates—she makes her own fate, thank you very much. When she walks by a construction site and admires the same sexy architect for the zillionth time in a week, the last thing she expects is to be slammed by a vision of his death.
Which activates the spell that will change their lives forever.
Kat’s destiny comes with a deadline. If they don’t fall in love by her twenty-fifth birthday—a mere three weeks away—Jake will never find the peace he seeks and Kat will lose her magic forever.
So what's your second chance story?
Cheers, Rayka Mennen

The Summons: A Goblin King Prequel
Writing a free prequel to The Goblin King was actually quite easy—selecting what to write was a different matter. Because the hero, Roan, was cursed nearly two thousand years ago there was a lot of material in his past. However one event stood out from the rest and that was the first time Eliza summoned Roan nine years ago. While that first meeting is referenced in the novel, in The Summons: A Goblin King Prequel it is explored more fully. But I had to get the heroine just right because at the time of the first summons she is only 16. I had to unravel her life further to put my self in her strappy heels as she comes face to face with the Goblin King for the first time and discovers there is more to him than first meets her eye.

Chronicles of Augeas

By Janet Quinn
I have now posted my Augeas short story anthology on Kindle. It is called Chronicles of Augeas and are dark fantasy stories. They are about the kingdom of Augeas where magic lives along side of humans. There is evil that would change the kingdom and destroy the magic. Instead, the city is being destroyed along with the lord of the city. The citizens do what they can to survive while others do what they can to stop the evil.
The stories are illustrated with pictures of the characters and facts at the end about the city and the people who live there. They are delightful stories about hardship and victory, evil and kindness. They can be found at http://www.amazon.com/Chronicles-of-Augeas-ebook/dp/B005MVAQ7O/ref=sr_1_1?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1316230113&sr=1-1
I have been working on my alternate universe story. I actually have two complete chapters and a start for the next one. Pax and Sasha are about to find another murder victim, this time killed by magic.
The story still needs a title, but one does not seem to be coming to me. I wish I had more time to work on it, but teaching my college classes keeps me busy.
I hope everyone is having a great fall.

Farewell Summer, Hello Autumn
By
N. J. Walters
I hope you all had a fabulous summer. It wasn’t so wonderful where I live. We had a ton of rain and very little sunshine, but my husband and I managed to enjoy ourselves in spite of the weather. Now autumn is quickly coming and with it the cool, crisp air and beautiful color palate that spreads over the landscape.
I admit that this time of year puts me in the mood to read paranormal books. I love the shorter days and longer nights, the changing of the leaves in the forest, the pumpkins on the porch, and the hint of frost in the air. It’s the perfect time of year to delve into a bit of the paranormal.
That’s exactly what I’ve done with my latest release from Samhain Publishing—Dreams of Seduction.

BLURB:
Maggie O’Neill goes along with her two best friends’ candle-magick spell to summon a lover only because, well, they are her BFFs. She doesn’t really believe in this stuff. Yet the aftermath of the spell leaves her strangely hot and bothered, and then the dreams of a man start—and not just any man. Jed Bearson. Pity, since she’s sworn off men for the foreseeable future.
Jed, part-time deputy and painter, doesn’t tell many people that he has the ability to let his spirit travel outside his body. One night, despite his self-imposed rule to never invade anyone’s privacy, he follows an irresistible pull to Maggie’s bedside. He’s astounded to find her crying out his name in private pleasure. After months of giving her space, maybe it’s time to approach her.
Maggie and Jed’s first touch is lightning hot—and their passion is a thunderclap of erotic pleasure. But when Jed reveals he’s a spiritwalker, Maggie’s reaction is like a curtain of cold rain descending between them. Leaving him wondering what she’s afraid of. Magic? Him? Or of following her heart?
I had a lot of fun writing this book. It gave me the chance to explore astral travel or dream walking. Of course, this is fiction and I gave my characters abilities that may be beyond what is possible…maybe. Either way, the magick of the spell brings these two people together. What they do with that possibility is entirely up to them.
I hope this new season brings you health and happiness and maybe a walk on the darker side of writing.
N.J. has always been a voracious reader, and now she spends her days writing novels of her own. Vampires, werewolves, dragons, time-travelers, seductive handymen, and next-door neighbors with smoldering good looks—all vie for her attention. It’s a tough life, but someone’s got to live it.

10 Last Minute Ways to Promote Your Book
Your mouth goes dry. Your heart pounds. The room darkens. Your brain freezes, and all you can think is "My WHAT?!? You mean I have to sell this thing too?"
Relax. You're not the first author who missed the "Authors Must Sell Their Own Books" Memo. It's easy to focus so hard on writing and editing that once your release date is announced you find yourself at a loss for even a semblance of a plan to market this darling piece of literature you've spent the last however many days/weeks/months creating.
Grab a paper bag and breathe into it to keep from hyperventilating and passing out. Once you've calmed down enough to read, check out these ten last minute things you can do to get off to a good start. You might want to use some of them for the next book as well.
1. Use what's already at hand. Unless your book is the very first ever released by your publisher, they likely have things in place you can use to promote. Check to see if they have an author blog, Yahoo group, announcement list, or newsletter. Sign up and use all of them.
2. Find other authors whose books are releasing close to the same date as yours. See what they're doing to promote their books. Ask if they'd like to partner with you for a contest, blog hop, or other event. After all, you both gain by working together.
3. Make the most of social media. If you aren't using them yet, by all means sign up for Facebook and Twitter. If you don't know how to use them, start by going to Google and searching "how to use Twitter" (likewise for Facebook). There are thousands of tutorials. The most read generally pop to the top of a search, so pick three or four articles and read them. Twitter is fun and easy. Facebook is a bit more complicated, but IMHO, it's a necessity for authors today. You need an internet footprint, and these two powerhouses are great spots to start.
4. Join Goodreads. http://www.goodreads.com/ You can upload your book information, create an author page, and find reviewers for your books.
5. Pick an author promotion site and stick with it. I'm writing this on the Romance Studio's blog. I've been one of their featured authors since 2004, and if I had to pick only my website and two other sources, TRS would be one of the two. The benefits far outweigh the cost. Go to http://theromancestudio.com and look for information on becoming a featured author. Choosing a second site is tough -- there are so many to choose from. I'd recommend CoffeeTime Romance or Romance Junkies. I'm friends with the owners of both and really would have a hard time saying which is better -- each is perfect in its own way. But definitely start with the Romance Studio.
6. Join a few Yahoo groups. There are many good ones. Choose groups that fit your genre, and keep up on what they offer. TRS, CoffeeTime, and Romance Junkies all have great Yahoo groups. I even have one myself, dedicated to bringing authors and readers together. Romance Lives Forever has promo days and chats, and a calendar that shows open dates for guests on the Romance Lives Forever Blog. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/romancelivesforever/
7. Look for promo advice online. Savvy Authors is an incredible source. You can find quality training there, in a forum setting that fosters success.8. Marketing for Romance Writers is another great site. I created this one, and two main things differentiate it from other spots online. A) There are never fees for workshops. B) It's chock full of industry-people including published (and hope to be) authors, publishers, editors, agents, cover artists, promo groups, and more. It's a self-help group that fosters mentoring and enables anyone to ask for help and advice -- and to give it. There is even a monthly newsletter to help you promote your new release. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/MarketingForRomanceWriters/
9. If you have a blog, set up a countdown to the release date for your book. For the next (however many days you have) list one item about your characters, the setting, or give background info about yourself.
10. Do something every day to promote your book. Whether it's tweeting about research you did, sharing a writing tip on Facebook, posting a character insight on Goodreads, or writing on your blog... do something every day to move your career forward.
Next book, you'll have a list of ten quick things you are already doing as a basis for an even stronger plan. Although from personal experience, I suggest you keep that paper bag handy. ;)

Hellhounds... On the bad guy’s trail...
Zol or Zin sans their tuxedo... Myth, when it comes to Hades, is a funny and often amusing thing, so my hellhound heroes, Zol and Zin, tell me while sipping their dry martinis. Since Zin and Zol generously revealed their happily-ever-after story with Kandy Apple, their one witch, who am I not to believe?
It is easy to believe that myth is only driven by the flights and fancies of our imaginations. Why not? We daydream. We wish. We create stories and art that is far-fetched fantasy.
Throughout recorded history, myth has been bent according to the reality of the times as the bards did during the Middle Ages. Also, myth, and the facts of history, have been twisted, and used to serve those in power who want control over others.
From my learned and un-learned experience, a myth is often based on a truth, often an undiscovered truth still shrouded by the mists of history.
With that in mind ~ Hellhounds... On the bad guy’s trail... ~ an excerpt from my latest release, Kandy Apple and Her Hellhounds.
Zolivar and Zindale
August 14, 2009
“Ready to unleash your inner being?” Zol asked his twin. Utterly naked, he pulled off his gold and onyx signet ring, twirled it once on his finger, then slid it inside his tuxedo pants pocket.
Zin stripped off his dress pants and tossed them inside their black sports car, affectionately known as the Twilight Mirage. He shut the door with a neat twist of his wrist. “I’m releasing my inner beast,” he returned with dry amusement.
Standing side by side, they traveled their supernatural gazes over the Mojave Desert’s moonlit landscape. As one, they searched out their target, a corporate hit man. Currently, he followed a prominent woman herbalist. Using biblical herbs, she had recently created a formula that rendered any virus inert.
Since the woman’s products already sold well, several of the flu vaccine companies had decided to go Mafia, eliminating the threat to their profits in the old-fashioned way.
“The only good competition is no competition,” Zol and Zin uttered in unison. On mission, they’d recently infiltrated a Big Pharma company party and heard that phrase spoken several times.
Sighting the hit man, the enemy to humanity that they’d sworn to hunt down and deliver to Hades, Zol and Zin used their internal radar, locking in his position. A second later, their heads swivelled and their fiery gazes connected.
Mirror reflections of each other, their eyes flared simultaneously, flashing to hellfire red. Their features took on a reddish glow, their gazes remaining intensely brilliant.
Growling like thunder in their throats, Zol and Zin morphed into what they were, hellhounds.
Their guttural howls ripped through the night and seemed to strike the moon. Luna rode high in the midnight heavens, a glowing Halloween orange and nearly full.
As they gathered their sleek brute bodies, preparing for the chase, horrendous snarls issued from the twin hellhounds. Their coal-black lips curled upwards over their scimitar-like fangs, now dripping with poisonous saliva.
Together they leapt toward their prey. The explosive power of their beast muscles rippled beneath their hairless ebony hides. An impenetrable shield to most weapons and all manner of magic, their hides were composed of alchemically-arranged volcano magma.
Totally driven by the hunt, they raced in perfect concert with each other, their gargantuan paws skimming over the desert floor instead of striking fully. As they ran, Zol and Zin existed in two realms, the world above and the Underworld.
Scarcely aware of what else moved around them, they caught Geraldo’s scent and the smells of his expensively outfitted Jeep. With each giant-bounding stride toward their target, their hellbeast instincts grew.
Since Geraldo’s employers wanted the exact proportions of herbal substances used in Mary Sweetwater’s formula, and were willing to pay him a small fortune, Geraldo had first attempted to gain her trust but failed. He’d also tried ingratiating himself with her family and friends. That hadn’t succeeded, either, despite his vile seduction of her sister.
From their otherworldly vantage point, Zol and Zin had observed Geraldo ignore every divine urging not to continue with his corporate theft, then his murder of Mary. However, the hit man eventually crossed the invisible line and now belonged to their punishing jowls, to their boss, Hades.

The Love Covenant Series: A Taste and more
Somewhere along the way, the characters I first brought to life in Love Tattoo garnered enough interest and fans that one book led to another and now to a third. In advance of publication today for the third novel, Love Knots, my publisher for these books made it officially a series, the Love Covenant series. This is a paranormal romance series with Irish vampire Will Brennan and his new lady, the lovely Cara Riley, a Texas gal singer. Maybe the best way to share what appeals to so many would be an excerpt from the newest volume, book three, Love Knots:
The night sky stretched above me, endless and vast. I felt so small and yet not insignificant at all but empowered. If I needed a visual to define eternal, to paint a picture of what an everlasting love that I shared with Will, then there could be none better than this moment. I stared; eyes open wide and made a mental image, a brain snapshot to last forever, something to keep and remember always.
I wanted to sweep all of it into my arms, to embrace the ceaseless space, the immeasurable beauty, and the ageless wonder of the sea, the sky by night. I have no idea how long I stood there as the waves washed up around my feet, silent and yet filled with more emotion than I could ever select words to express but Will stood beside me, just as quiet, my hand clasped in his. We were part of this and we remained one. When I turned to him, eyes brimming with joyful tears, heart overflowing with love, he faced me and with his own eyes shimmering with moisture, he spoke words now familiar to me because he used them before.
Now, however, the beautiful poetry resonated with even more meaning for us both,
“And yet I wish but for the thing I have, my bounty is as boundless as the sea, my love as deep; the more I give to thee, the more I have for both are infinite.”
The immensity of his love overwhelmed me, the power more enormous than anything, greater than any man made wonder. The scope of it stretched beneath the timeless stars, the wonder of it expanded through whatever heart I possessed, and brimmed over to flood my soul. What I had with Will Brennan, I thought, was worth all I gave up to claim it and whatever I might face at the end of time; I could because of this love.
The truth of that sang in my soul, a greater, stronger song that any I ever attempted to sing before. I wished I knew as much poetry as he did, Shakespeare or otherwise, but instead, the words in my mouth came, as usual, from a song. Suzi Quatro and Chris Norman did a song that I loved back in the late 1970’s, vintage but with lyrics I loved so I sang some of them to Will now,
“Our love is alive and so it begins, foolishly laying our hearts on the table, stumbling in, our love is a flame, burning within.”
He opened his arms to me, as broad and open as the vast panorama of water, wind, and sky spread out around us and I walked into them. I came home into his embrace and all the emotion, strong and potent, welled up in me and exploded so that I wept in his arms. I sobbed not with sadness but with immeasurable joy, rich feelings too volatile to contain. He wept, too, for I felt the rain of his tears, the tremors of his body against mine. After we spent our emotions, poured them into one another, we sat down on the sand, wrapped together and listened to the wondrous night music of God.

Back Cover Copy!
I’m glad I left it until I get back home, because as luck would have it, Agent Kristen Nelson was a guest speaker at the conference. I attended one of her workshops where the focus was on writing back cover copy. Wow! Light bulb moment! I suddenly knew where I’d gone wrong. I hadn’t used that one element, that one inciting moment that catapulted my heroine into a world of intrigue, betrayal and love. I needed to start with the catalyst that took a crazy idea from my head and drove my characters and their story to a satisfying conclusion, because without that catalyst there would be no story. What an awakening moment. Thank you, Kristen Nelson.
It got me thinking about what it is that captures a reader’s attention when they pick up a book in a store and read the back cover. Is it a play on words that draws you in until you know you can’t leave the store without buying the book? Does it excite your imagination? Is it character? Plot? Or a combination of both?
What grabs you and yanks you into the story? This lowly writer would really like to know.

Fun with a new life
I promised myself that on Sept. 1 I would start new habits and get back into the writing groove. This is the longest hiatus I've ever had from writing since I was published, which is 5 years ago now. I look around my home office at all the book covers and I'm proud of what I've done: 25 books (3 of those are re-releases, but they took some editing and some time, so I count those as "new").
What will the future hold? I have no idea -- and that's interesting. I don't have any pending contracts. I'm going to try the indie publishing route for a few books and see where that takes me. Given how publishing is changing now, it's a sure bet that in a few months, I may change my mind. This is a time of amazing flux in the publishing world, a true upheaval and I think we're just at the beginning of the tide of change. I'll ride with it for a while and see where it takes me.
In the meantime, I'd like to introduce you to three of my indie books: the History Patrol series, all about reincarnation, romance, second chances in life, and time travel -- toss in telepathic animals, shape-shifters, and a few villains (John Dillinger, Jessie James, and a mad scientist) and you know I had fun writing these!
This fall I'll be returning to my mysteries: I have 3 ready to publish, I have one to edit, and one to finish. Then I'll see what strikes my fancy in the wintertime ... another time travel book? Work on my sci-fi series?
Only time will tell!
