How Old Are You in Your Head?

Today I begin wending my way among Bloggers, Facebookers and Tweeters (#younginmyhead), gathering responses to the curious sensibility surrounding the ages of our brains. I’ve got anecdotal information about myself and my friends and family, supporting the idea that our brains don’t seem to age along with our bodies.  In fact, I discovered that most people describe their brain’s age as much younger than the time their bodies have spent on earth.

I’m so curious about this phenomenon.  Indeed, I can’t wait for thousands of people to weigh in on the discussion about brain age.  How young are you in your head?  Why do you suppose you picked that age?  Are our brains refusing to grow old, while our bodies mature  right along?

It’s not mere amazement about this state of affairs that pushes me to ask these questions.  As a writer of suspense, I’m always thinking about the ages of my main characters.  Maybe my experience is too limited, but so far, I’m seeing that most inveterate readers prefer to identify with heroes and heroines who are in their thirties. Early forties, maybe.

So is there some chemical in our brains that shouts: I’m forever in my thirties and forties, no matter what happens to my body?

Help me.  Tell me.  How young are you in your head?  And why do you think you picked that age?

(In case you’re wondering, my suspense novel, LAST RESORT, highlights main characters…you guessed it…in their early thirties!)
