LIVING WITH GHOSTS by Minnette Meador

LIVING WITH GHOSTS
“Keenan was used to living with hundreds of people. He no longer felt crowded, talked to himself, or went to therapists. Not that he liked it, mind you; given half a chance, he would have buried them all…” A GHOST OF A CHANCE, a paranormal romantic comedy by Minnette Meador (July 2011 – Resplendence Publishing)

Those words were the beginning of a journey that led me into strange supernatural realms and introduced me to demons, entities, angels, and yes, many ghosts. Why did I go there? Because I used to live with a very real, very funny ghost of my own; we called him Marvin.

I was living with my two infant sons, my 3-year-old, a lovely roommate, and her little girl in the bottom half of a duplex in Portland, Oregon. It was the year of Reagonomics and a tough time in my life. I was a single mom struggling to stay afloat.

After my twins were born, things started happening that we couldn’t explain; the TV would go on in the middle of the night when all of us were in bed. Things would fly off counters and crash to the floor. But the strangest of all happened about two months later.

We began to lose belts. And not just belts; scarves, ropes, loose electrical cords, and even shoes from time to time. Blaming the kids would have been easy, except for the fact that they lived in the nursery and didn’t have access to such things. During one frustrating search, late for work, Sarah finally came out to me, her face pale.

“I found your belt,” she said quietly.

“Great! Where was it?”

She held up the limp leather and said, “Under my mattress.”

“How did it…” But then we both headed for our respective bedrooms and lifted each mattress gingerly. Low and behold, there were the missing items. We knew we had an uninvited guest.

Marvin was actually a very polite ghost. Although he didn’t like belts of any kind (and tennis shoes for some reason) he quit throwing things at us in the kitchen and settled down to just watching TV late at night. He didn’t like men, apparently, because every time one would come over, he’d run upstairs to our neighbor’s place. I’d get a call…

“You have a man down there?” she would ask.

“Uh, yeah. Sorry about that.”

“It’s okay. Just checking.”

We learned to live with him… and to keep our belts hidden.

So, tell me about your own ghosts. Have you had an experience with one?

A GHOST OF A CHANCE - Excerpt
a paranormal romantic comedy
by Minnette Meador
RELEASE DATE: JUNE 22, 2011
Resplendence Publishing

Keenan Swanson is your typical, everyday graphic designer. Well, except for the hundreds of pesky, prank-loving poltergeists that make his life interesting (in a Chinese curse sort of way). He finds his situation precarious yet manageable—until witty, smoking-hot coworker Isabella enters the scene and Keenan decides he wants her all for himself. With a horny succubus who has other ideas, a burly city cop determined to lock Keenan away, and an evil entity who’s hell-bent on using Keenan’s seed to create a living demon, the reluctant psychic realizes he just might not come out of this alive—or with heart intact.

“Hysterical and very original!”

i cant wait to read a ghost of a chance. thank you for the ride along that was nice. and i do agree that we are safer. i took a look at the picture of the child sitting on the floor in the hallway holding what seems to be something red. was this your living with ghosts.
i have a small girl child and a young man who are always with me. i can feel then around me.

Marvin sounds like a quirky Casper the Friendly Ghost. I know if I ever meet a ghost, I would want to meet a nice, non-threatening one. I wonder if Marvin was drawn to small children considering it was a household full of them? I think I read somewhere small children are also attuned to ghosts, maybe not as much as dogs but on some level. It's wonderful that because of your experience you were able to create a fun world in your book.

I'll be dropping by to visit you at your other stop later on. I love ghost stories so this post was a treat.

I've never met a ghost (and I like it that way!). Like Na, I'm wondering if small children and dogs are more sensitive to ghosts. I have both at home...

Thanks, Marybelle - You have been a wonderful companion during this whirlwind! I really appreciate the support.

Hi, Brigitte - No, this was just a picture I found, but it reminded me so much of this sweet soul.

Marvin was definitely unique, Na, but he did have his bad moment. Twice I had to dodge flying glass jars in the kitchen! LOL

Semi-Stalkey here, Bama!

I think they are, Kanya. I know my kids could see them when they were small, but then grew out of it. It's a good questions.

I have not personally had any experiences with ghosts... Since you have Minnette hmm can you see them like a real person.. like they LOOK like flesh and blood? or do they like shimmer etc? And would you see Marvin throw stuff at you? I think I'd be really freaked out about that... and have my son sleep with me everynight lol :)

*huggles*

Minnette Meador said...

Hey, Chelsea! I've only "seen" three things and none of them were like flesh and blood... One was a white face in a second story window, one was a mist at the end of my bed, and one was a shadow at the bottom of a long staircase. None of them lasted more than a few seconds, I don't think. The one that live with us when my twins were babies never "appeared" but a jar flew off the fridge across the room, barely missing me, and cups jumped out of the cupboards from time to time. Plus the belts, of course... :o)

Hi Minnette,

You've had an interesting life. Single motherhood must have been challenging.

Minnette Meador said...

Hi, Vonnie! It was, but we muddled through. The kids turned out ok... no murderers and all are gainfully employed. They really are wonderful kids and actually, they did some raising of me as well. :o)

All my best!

Minnette...what's next for you in the writing world?

Minnette Meador said...

Thanks, Cynthia! It's been wonderful chatting with you. I'm going to be working on the 2nd book in the Ghost series then another historical featuring my Egyptian Pirate from Gladiator. The Gladiator Prince comes out in September so we'll be doing another blog hop, so stay tuned! :o)

Minnette Meador said...

Hi, Allie! Thanks for joining us! We lived in an old house divided into apartments, one upstairs and one down. We lived in the lower one. Marvin would go upstairs to hide and I would get a call from the tenant asking if we had male guest since he would wreck havoc of there for a while. :o)

I missed half the tour--feel like I fell asleep waiting for summer. But I love this article. Wonder if we have a Marvin--keep losing belts (and teaspoons).
