Writing Habits

All writers have different habits. Some write in the daytime, while others (like me) find their creativity flows better at night. Some like to listen to music while they work, others don’t. From the start of a story to the end, each person has his or her own way of doing things

One of my writing habits is before I'm ready to turn in a manuscript, I always read it aloud several times because it helps me get a sense of how the story flows. I also notice more details when I read aloud. For me it's easier to pick out a character removing his shirt two times in the same scene if I'm speaking the words instead of reading silently. I don't catch everything (thank heaven for editors!) but I always find more mistakes when I read out loud than when I don't and if I haven't read a story out loud, I won't turn it in. Because of this my pets have heard more than their share of romance. If they understood I'd wonder what they think about my shapeshifters!

What are some of your writing habits? Is there something you feel you absolutely need to do before you're ready to let someone else see your story?

About Kate

What do trips around the world, endless nights of breathtaking sex, and a muscular, 6-foot 3-inch, brown-haired, blue-eyed significant other have to do with Kate Hill? Absolutely nothing, but she can dream, can't she? In reality Kate is a vegetarian New Englander who loves writing romantic fantasies.

Currently, she might not be traveling around the world, but Kate has visited Europe and Africa and those beautiful places have been wonderful inspiration for her writing. While working at various times as a clerk, assistant karate instructor, house painter and banker, Kate dreamed of being an author. In 1996 her first short story was accepted for publication and since then she has sold over one hundred short stories, novellas and novels.

When she's not working on her books, Kate enjoys reading, working out, and researching vampires and Viking history.

I like to write early in the morning before every day distractions come along. This means beginning whenever I wake up between 4 and 6 am to accomplish the writing goals of the day. Then I can spend afternoons on promotion. As for finishing a book to my satisfaction, I have to do at least two final read throughs.

I know what you mean about distractions, Nancy. Late night or early morning hours seem to be the only time when everything is quiet enough to really get work done. Thanks for posting!
