The Holidays are Coming

By Janet Quinn Cornelow

The holidays have arrived. With them comes decorating, shopping, cards, food, parties, and not enough time. Thanksgiving was nice, but I was so tired when it was done. Cooking is hard work. Most of the kids helped in the kitchen. Tom, my oldest, emptied the dishwasher and broke my big plastic mixing bowl. It cracked right in half. Didn’t think it could break like that.

Michael, the middle son, tried to carve the turkey, but gave it up to my sister, Kathy. He did mash the potatoes, which Rob had peeled and cooked. Jessi, the oldest daughter-in-law, fixed the biscuits. Loki, the youngest daughter-in-law, wrote happy birthday on Jessi’s birthday cake. I have a very small kitchen, so we were all tripping over each other. I can’t cook without my walker to sit on since I don’t stand well. It was hectic and fun. Then we all ate too much. Chewbaca, the dog, really enjoyed dinner. He got Tom to feed him from the table. Such bad habits we teach

the baby.

Michael came over on Sunday and helped me decorate. We got most of it done before he had to leave to go out with his in-laws to celebrate his wife’s birthday. I will finish on Thursday since I get the day off from work. My boss can’t afford to pay me.

With all the other things that have to be done for Christmas, I am also taking a training class to teach online for a second university. I already teach for the University of Phoenix at their junior college. I am also helping to shut down the Sylvan Learning where I work now and have been for nearly 13 years. We close on December 16. I will miss the “babies” I work with as well as the job and the medical insurance. All these things we take for granted. I also have final projects in the classes I am teaching to grade and new classes to start. Maybe I will get Christmas done.

Needless to say, I have not been doing any writing. I figure when the new year starts, I will have plenty of time to write since I won’t have to get up and go to work anymore. I plan on starting a new book, the alternate universe one I’ve been going to start for awhile, as soon as the new year starts. Then I will have something to blog about.

I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday season and enjoys their families and friends.
