Escalating the Relationship

Part of the fun of writing romance is finding ways to escalate the relationship between hero and heroine. In my new romantic suspense, NOWHERE TO HIDE, heroine Colleen wants little or nothing to do with hero Graham. He's a cop, and she just left the police force in her hometown after a case went south. Cops are not on her BFF list.

But Graham has other ideas. He's figured out approaching her through typical channels isn't going to cut it. Below is an excerpt showing his unique wooing technique:

Stepping to the center of the mats, Graham motioned to her. "Come on. You said you needed to hit someone."

She approached him, arms in a guard position and they circled each other. He took in the smooth way she moved, the confidence in her eyes. She flashed him a huge grin and the next thing he knew, she'd swiveled around, thrust a hip into his gut and he was flat on his back, staring up at her.

"Not fair." He jumped to his feet. "You cheated."

"No way. I took you down fair and square."

"You smiled. I got distracted." He brushed his hands against his jeans. "Won't happen again. Two out of three?"

They circled again. "How did you know I could spar?"

"I didn't. But I figured I'd let you pound on me. Or we can go over to the bags you can punch away if you don't want to keep sparring "

"Afraid I'll hurt you?"

He grinned. "Try it." He crooked his fingers in invitation. Nobody got by him twice.

Colleen came at him with a right jab, but this time, he was ready. He blocked it, grabbed her wrist and stepped in with his left foot. His right forearm to her chest, his right leg sweeping behind to kick hers out from under. This time she was on the mat, with him kneeling beside her.

"You got lucky," she said, accepting his hand as he helped her to her feet. "I was letting you get complacent."

He got the next fall, but it took a lot longer. There was something comfortably familiar about the way she moved, not unlike sparring with his colleagues. She blocked most of his moves and got in a few clean hits of her own. They were both breathing harder now and his shirt stuck to his back. "That's two out of three," he panted. "Want to call it a night?"

"Not on your life. I'm still warming up."

Fierce determination shone in her eyes, and he knew she was no longer thinking about anything except getting him to the floor. For a split second he thought about letting her get past him, but he knew faking a loss would be the end of anything remotely resembling a friendship. He took what she threw at him and gave her as much. In a sudden spurt, she managed to get through his guard. She stepped in close, grabbed his left sleeve and wrapped her right arm around his waist. She swiveled around, pulled him onto her back. A second later he was rolling over her hip and flat on his back again. She had one hand at his throat and was poised above him, her knee precariously close to doing serious damage. He didn't dare move. Her green eyes sparkled, her face glistened with sweat, and he reveled in her satisfied smile.

"This one's mine, Harrigan," she said, one hand on either side of his chest, straddling him.

"No question about it." She edged forward and he drew in a sharp breath. "But, given where you've got your knee, I think you should call me Graham."

What unconventional "courtship" techniques have you enjoyed in books?

Good morning, Terry! Thought I'd pop in from my sunny (but windy) PEI vacation to say hi -- and to tell you I love the excerpt. That is indeed unconventional wooing...but way intriguing! Congats on this latest release...and have a wonderful day! (Are your countertops done yet?) =)

Warmly,
Linda

Hi, Linda - thanks SO much for stopping by. It's windy up here in the mountains of Colorado too. The countertops went in yesterday -- now we're waiting for the contractor to install the sinks, stove, dishwasher, etc., so we have water upstairs again.

I'm still drinking coffee so I can't think of an unconventional courtship at the moment but I really like that excerpt :)

Katie - glad you enjoyed the excerpt. And once you've had your coffee, I'm sure you'll think of something.

Love this guy. Going over to buy the book right now.

In my romantic suspense, One Small Victory, the relationship was unconventional, at least in terms of the romance genre. The central characters did not end up in bed or even get beyond one passionate kiss - despite my editors efforts to make more happen. But it couldn't. He is a detective and she is his confidential informant. There are lines they could not cross.

Maryann, thank you SO much. If a character grabs your attention, that's the best praise I can get.

Hot and humid here, could do with some wind. Just got back from South Dakota where there was always a gentle wind. Great excerpt, Terry! Unconventional courtships....let me think. My Eric in Thin Ice did teach a reluctant Emily to ice skate and there were several symbolic references to trust and starting over (they got off to a bad start, naturally) and taking it slow in the scene. Does that count?

All the best in sales to you with Nowhere to Hide!

Liana, that works for me (and I loved that book). Thanks for stopping by.

Kim Reynolds, the heroine of both my romantic suspense mystery novels, THE INFERNO COLLECTION and THE DROWNING POOL, is a woman who has every reason to distrust policemen. So naturally, she and a cop fall in love. Building the relationship is an important part of these novels, although they're still murder mystery fiction. Best of luck with the new novel. Love the cover! The relationship sounds great.

Loved the excerpt - nice way to start a courtship with a physical activity with its sensual overtones :-)
In Marrying Money, my short romantic comedy, the heroine is a 21st century English titled-but-broke lady looking for a rich titled husband, and the hero is a wealthy but untitled building contractor. Ah, but love conquers all...

I'm loving these exerpts. Gotta work in a trip to Barnes & Noble this weekend and pick up NOWHERE TO HIDE.

My WIP has a paranormal element so the initial romance involves her trying to keep him out of her thoughts - literally. And, of course, not succeeding.

Sounds like a good read, Terry. These two characters sizzle on the page. Wishing you many sales.

Great scene! There's that sense of humor again. :) It makes me want to spice up the encounters in my own WIP. I'll have to give some thought on making that happen. Thanks for sharing the excerpt.

Jacqueline - thanks for stopping by. I've read your books--your characters work at that relationship too.

Glenys - yes, those opposites attracting are fun to write.

Linda - you'd probably have to ask B&N to special order the book. Easier to get it from Amazon or the Wild Rose Press site (links on my website).

Stacey - I can't write comedy, but there's GOT to be humor. After all, don't we all like someone who makes us laugh?

Terry,

Checked B&N's website - you're right, they had ten listings for the title NOWHERE TO HIDE, all different authors, none of them yours. Hopped over to Amazon and found it there, no prob. Thanks for saving me the trip.

Linda - glad to point you in the right direction. Living where I do, ordering on line is always my first choice. Eventually, I think the digital versions will show up at the Barnes & Noble e-book store.

Great excerpt, Terry. Can't think of an unconventional courtship at the moment because I'm still dwelling on the one you shared. :)

Kaelee--thanks for stopping by, and glad you enjoyed the excerpt.

What a great excerpt. I love the chemistry between the H/H. Nice job.

Terry Odell said...

Rebecca, thanks. There has to be chemistry. Glad it shows.

Joyce - I tend to color outside the lines, so telling me something is different is a good thing--for me at least. :-)
