Don't Hate Me 'Cause the Weather's Beautiful

I've maintained for quite awhile that I live in the best place on Earth. This doesn't always go over so well when it's winter and I'm walking around in short sleeves and sandals, it goes over even less well in summer when the weather hovers in the mid 70s during the day and dips into the mid 50s at night.

And have I mentioned the wineries? The apricots and lemons growing in my backyard?  The lack of mosquitoes?

Okay, so if I haven't already alienated everyone, let me just say that there's a reason I'm bringing this up. The weather here was a big inspiration for my newest release, Edge of Heaven, which is set primarily in Limbo. In fact, Limbo is a lot like California. Just consider this description of it as given by my main character, Edge:

"How do I describe this place in a way you’ll understand? Being in limbo… Well, it’s a lot like being booked for an indefinite stay at a very exclusive executive retreat. Sure, it’s posh, it’s peaceful, it’s pleasant. It’s just about anything you want it to be, within limits. But there’s a reason why heaven’s called heaven and limbo…is not.

It’s all just a little too bland here, a little too remote. There’s this sense of being isolated, of being out of touch that you never quite get used to. Just like you can never completely lose the feeling that you’ve been cut off from something pretty damn important. Even if you’re not quite certain what that something is.

It might take you a while to notice that last part, though. If you’re a new arrival in limbo, I can guarantee you the first thought in your mind is not gonna be, How can I keep busy? Stay long enough, however, and that’ll change. Time doesn’t exactly pass here in what I like to call never-never land -- it just is. But all the same, with nothing but your own sorry thoughts to occupy your mind, eternity has a way of weighing on your spirits after a while. To say nothing of the way all that peacefulness gets to wearing on your nerves."

A lot of people seem to feel that way about California. They complain about the "lack of seasons" or the artificiality of the place...more so in SoCal than here, of course, but then again, Berkeley is no one's idea of "the real world". More's the pity, IMO.

Me, I like living in eternal springtime just fine. Not having to worry about the weather leaves me more time to think about writing, which is just as it should be. lol!

Welcome to the afterlife, where men are men and the angels are fallen...

Edge is an unlikely angel. Unable to atone for the sins he committed while human, he's resigned to spending an eternity in limbo--until he meets a miracle named Mattie.

I love that description and I'm blown away by a story set in "limbo". So great, PG! And though I don't live there, California is about my most favourite place, too.
