Contemporary or Paranormal to Soothe the Foul Mood?

I know, I know. It’s a nauseatingly familiar question—what’s your favorite romance genre? But I want to ask it a bit differently, and narrow it down to just two genres. What’s your mood been for lately—real characters or those of the paranormal variety? Settings that you feel like you live in or could visit tomorrow, or the fantasy realms?

If you’re like me, you enjoy both genres depending upon your mood and circumstances. Maybe it's just me, but people's moods have been pretty edgy lately. There are some things that are affecting us all presently, a bleak economic landscape, for one. In addition, a good portion of the United States and Canada has been hit by the bitterest, most grueling winter weather in people’s memories.

The publishing optimists proclaim that books thrive in such a climate. Times get tough, and people escape with a good book. I’m going to assume that’s true for the sake of argument for the moment. My question is, what would your chosen escape be during this bleak winter of 2009? I’d like to take a quick pulse of the romance community, a very informal and unscientific poll right here today.

Imagine that you just had a really rough day. It shouldn’t be hard. We all have them, right? Here in Chicago, mine have usually been associated with mountains of snow, treacherous driving conditions and mind-numbing traffic (All of which I used as plot elements in my next release FLIRTING IN TRAFFIC. Well--we do write what we know.) I’m sure you can fill in the blank with your pet peeve. Anyway…you finally get home and have the opportunity to curl up next to your TBR pile.

Just off the top of your head, what do you pick out? I know so many factors go into your decision, but I’m just curious. Would a contemporary or paranormal do the trick? Has your answer changed from last year at this time?

What about for television shows and movies? Same conditions, what would you like to watch to settle your foul mood? A contemporary drama or comedy, or something of the paranormal/fantasy variety?

Almost Forty-Five Years of Romance Novels...

Yes, that is how long I’ve been reading and penning romance. No, I haven’t been an aspiring author all those years...but, certainly, long enough. It occurred to me I’ve had a front row reading-seat in how romance has evolved and how heroines have changed. While certain aspects of the romance novel have remained the same ~ for example, the happy ending ~ other elements have changed with the times and, in my opinion, have helped initiate certain societal transformations. Before this becomes an intellectual mind-numbing exercise, I’ll make it easy on myself by using one of my heroines as a simple example of how romance novels have changed and have not changed.

Lady Sheridan in ALL SHADES OF BLUE PARADISE lives in an aristocratic fantasy world I created. While she is a damsel in some distress and saves her brother from his ill-advised debts, thereby becoming the slave lover of Baron Zaggry, who is still in love with her... Sher is certainly no innocent virgin awaiting her prince charming to discover her during a ton season in London. No, she rides in a dangerous ancient horse game. She’s been in charge of her family’s lands for years. Her passions rival those of the Baron, who would sneer at the lackluster carnal pleasures of the most notorious rakes, in those early 1950-60's romance novels.
Aristocratic, yes. Innocent, no. And, yes, power is an aphrodisiac now, just as it was then. And courting a woman from the heart will always work, especially if her heart once belonged to the hero.
~~~~~~
Also, if you would like to know a bit about this year’s number and enjoy a romantic moment between Lady Sheridan and Baron Zaggry, this is what I wrote for my group blog ~ HAPPILY EVER AFTER ~
Winter in Blue & Romance in the Year of Two
Hi Romantics, 2009 is considered to be the Year of Two in the world of numerology. The number TWO is love, companionship and sharing ~ this year is about couples coming together to care for each other and to love each other from their hearts and souls. This year is all about romance in all its many-splendored expressions. So look for those lovely and loving ways to let your beloved know how much you cherish them.
If you’ve every wanted to learn the art of romance or bring more of a mood of romance into your life, this is the year to explore those possibilities, then implement the ideas that most resonate with you.
For example ~ what would make your bedroom more romantic to you? In my case, other than a wickedly sexy prince charming, it would be a red velvet divan with a heart-shaped back. It would be layers of mist-like gauze. It would be faux leopard throws, zebra-print blankets and heart-shaped pillows in every size and in every shade of pink and purple. Just as a beginning, of course.
Oops, don’t forget the gold-trimmed sheer fabrics draped about.
This Year of Two is also a time to join forces with each other, with our friends and family, to achieve our life dreams, as we are all doing with this blog. Working together, during this year, will bring about the most satisfaction and success...and the most romance into all our lives.
And, who couldn’t use a bit more romance...or, a whole lot.
Since my OtherRealm, erotic romance novella *** ALL SHADES OF BLUE PARADISE *** does not celebrate the holidays as we do here, I thought I’d write a winter courtship scene ten years prior to when the story begins. Yes, it’s all about romance in it’s purest form as Sher and Zag fall in love.
~~~
An OtherRealm novella, set in the dimensional world known as ~
The World of the Blue Pearl Moon–A world of lush erotic decadence, where the fiercest passions between a woman and a man need never be denied. A world of potent seductive arts, where every appetite is served in the salons and the lavish entertainments. A world of wicked and resplendent pleasures, where the love between a man and a woman is a sensual lusty affair, soaring up to the radiant blue vault of sky.
~~~
Winter in Blue
The Courtship of Sher and Zag ~
A prequel scene to ALL SHADES OF BLUE PARADISE ~
He rode beside her, Zag, the Baron, astride one of his winter steeds, a silvery gray stallion of majestic stature. Lady Sheridan glowed, a giddy excitement. Her heart winged toward him, the flight of a dove toward its mate. For a moment she closed her eyes, and hoped with all her being that his heart soared toward her. He’d spoken so. Just two days past. Two days of dreaming about him night and day. Of walking on a floor of air as she remembered the emerald smolder of his eyes only for her, as she remembered the fierce passion of his features before he had sealed her lips with a kiss that had been a silken blaze of pleasure over every inch of her flesh.
Goddess of the Blue Flame, she recalled his every word of love.
For two days now, she told herself to stop acting like a lust-wild virgin beneath the full blue pearl moon.
Yet, did she dare hope? Given his stud-formidable reputation with women, lots of women, could she afford to give her heart? His erotic talents and trysts were well-known throughout the kingdom. Still, in truth, she’d heard no woman claim his love as hers.
Shades of pale blue shimmered, a glaze over the deep blanket of snow on the mountain plateau, where she often trained her horses for competition. The cold air of winter only tickled her nose as bluefire raced through her veins. She listened to the snow-crunch of their horses’ hooves echo softly as they sedately traveled the scenic path. Blue-sky wishes, she wished her heart would quit fluttering, a fast-winging bird in her chest.
The frigid stillness around them, seemed as companionable as the silence between them now. She’d swiftly discovered being with him didn’t require the silly art of playing coy, of always engaging his attention.
“Sher.” His purring tone, so like a golden cougar, warmed her skin to honey. Clasping her gloved hand in his, he brought them to a halt. “Mother is throwing one of her extravagant balls for Father’s top business associates. Would you attend with me?”
His formal tone soared her insides, yet shattered her composure. This invitation to the Baroness’s high profile event was a step toward becoming engaged.
“Yes.” The icy mist of her breath met the mist of his.
“Sher, you have become my heart.”
Subtly, he squeezed her hand, his gaze a glisten of fire. Lifting her hand beneath his lips, he caught the edge of her glove with his teeth. Almost fiercely, he tugged, exposing a sliver of bare skin. With one kiss, soft yet completely potent, he seduced the underside of her wrist.
Spinning inside, she leaned toward him. Their lips collided in a searing kiss. As he claimed her mouth with a ferocity that pleased her, she moaned, inviting the play of his tongue. They dueled passionately, the swordplay of pleasure only interrupted when his stallion became impatient.
“I shall teach him better manners.” His grin wickedly teased her.
From Conception to Birth, Or One Book’s Journey to Publication
Ah, the first blush of romance. The first time you see the idea, sitting there in the corner of your mind, trying to get your attention in that inconspicuous manner these ideas sometimes adopt. You look away, convinced that there is no way this idea could possibly go anywhere. It’s just a fluke, a fling. Surely, you’ll forget it by morning. But when you look back, the idea is still there, sitting in the corner, flirting with you. So what’s a harmless little flirtation? You approach the idea cautiously, in a manner you hope is suave and sophisticated, but as you get closer, your excitement rises. Your heart begins to race. You lick your lips in anticipation. It’s even more exciting up close. So you flirt with it, spend the night with it, take it home with you. In the morning, you’re surprised that it’s still with you. After two months, you begin to believe this idea has a future. So you cultivate it, give up sleep for it, nurture it as it grows within you. Soon, what began as a nugget of an idea in your mind blossoms into a full-blown creature. It grows within you, like a fetus in a womb, becoming bigger by the month, more substantial. You can almost feel it move within you; you carry it everywhere, wherever you go, it’s there with you. All of your energy is devoted to it.
After a suitable gestation period, your little nugget of an idea, which you have affectionately begun to call “the book” while you search for the right title, is ready to make its appearance. Your months of labor are about to pay off as you prepare to deliver your book into the capable hands of the publisher who will introduce it to the world. But wait, his assistant has to help you clean it up a bit first and you are struck by the niggling thought, What if my baby’s ugly? What if I put this out there and no one likes it? But with the reassurances of your publisher, you clean the book up and send it back, maybe with a prayer or two, and you wait. Now it’s time for your baby to prove its worth.
As you can tell from my whimsical tale above, writing and publishing, to me, often mimic conception and birth. The stages of both are remarkably similar. There is the courtship period when you are first introduced to the idea that will one day take over your life. Followed by the get-to-know you period during which you decide whether or not the idea has longevity and you want to commit to it. Once you make that commitment, there is the gestation period – I think you can guess what happens here. The idea grows and grows, taking on a life of its own, convincing you that you are mad, suffering from a hormonal imbalance, or both. But in the end, it’s worth it because you deliver a rollicking, three hundred page epic that someone is bound to love – and not because they’re related to you.
So I guess you could say that Nora’s Soul is the first of my literary babies. She is almost two months old now, having made her debut in November, and growing stronger every day. Bringing her to the attention of the public is similar to the care and nurturing of an infant, requiring constant vigilance. Yet the pay off is that people are noticing her, some are cooing over her, and others even want to take her home with them. She may just be crawling now, but soon she will gain her legs and walk on her own – and I will sit back in amazement like any proud mother, thinking, Wow, I can’t believe I created that! And in the grand tradition of mothers everywhere, I will want to create another one, forgetting all of the pains and labor involved in the process. Keep your eyes open for the debut of Nora’s brother, Dante. Thank you for riding along with me on this whimsical journey into my take on writing. I hope you enjoyed the trip as much as I did.
Margay Leah Justice is the author of Nora’s Soul, from Second Wind Publishing, LLC. Nora’s Soul is currently available on Amazon.com. To read more about Margay and her writing, visit http://margayleahjustice.com.
It's All About The Shoes!
In VEXING THE VISCOUNT, my heroine Daisy masquerades as the French courtesan, Blanche La Tour in order to convince Lucian Beaumont to accept her help while he searches for a lost Roman treasure.
But how can a well-born miss convince anyone she's a jaded "bird of paradise?"
Daisy has several things going for her.
1. She has the real Blanche La Tour's very explicit memoirs for guidance.
2. She has access to her Great Aunt Isabella's closet. Isabella, now Lady Wexford, was a celebrated courtesan in her time. Daisy wears her aunt's best powdered wig, bequiling feathered mask and killer red dress!
3. She speaks only French to Lucian when she's playing Blanche, counting on the nasality of the language to disguise her voice.
But best of all, Daisy has . . . the shoes!
In VEXING THE VISCOUNT, Daisy wears 6 inch high Venetian platform shoes as part of her courtesan disguise. These were actually quite conservative. Some women tottered along on 22 inch chopines until a maximum height of 11 inches was mandated by law. In a time when streets frequently doubled as sewers, platform shoes made imminent sense.
They are also good for helping Daisy so vex Lucian, he doesn't know which way to turn. What's a man to do when he finds himself drawn to a petite spitfire by day and a sultry, statuesque beauty by night? And what's Daisy to do when she becomes jealous of . . . herself? Her brilliant plan has them both tied in knots.
The French courtesan Blanche La Tour would no doubt smile knowingly and explain it this way..."You only vex the one you love."
Happy Monday :) A little romance from J.J. Massa
I love The Romance Studio. Tina, Holly, everyone here has always been so supportive. I freely admit that sometimes, I’m slow about some things. But when Holly sent out a message about blogging and I took a look, I was kind of excited. Here, I’d get a chance to talk about one book at a time if I wanted and tell the people who read them what I was thinking. With so many other talented authors posting on other days, it would just be a change of pace. I like that. I can read about the other folks and just say a little here and there. I’m a lurker, so I really like that.
The book that I wanted to post about today is A Hunted Heart, available at Linden Bay Romance.
I wrote A Hunted Heart with my sister in mind, at first. It wasn’t going to be erotic but I wanted it to be romantic—and of course there had to be angst. What’s a good romance without angst? Is it possible to have a relationship and no upset? I expect that such a thing can happen, even in this day and age. Still, it’s much more fun to read a story with the requisite ups and downs, especially if there’s a good chance the hero and heroine will end up together.
So, I planned to include all the things I thought my sister would like to read about, but I wanted my story to be realistic. While I was at it, I wanted to explore the possibilities of reuniting a couple who’d had deep problems and issues to resolve. Could they get back together—was there life after trauma for such a beleaguered couple?
I also wanted it to be pertinent to her line of work—she’s a psychologist. After that, the story needed to be on the East Coast since we’re from there; even though she’s living in exile.
Okay, so it’s Arizona, not purgatory. You have to admit though, that it’s quite a trek from the Atlantic and plenty hot. (She doesn’t think it’s funny anymore when I whine about all that beach and no ocean. I don’t buy the idea that it matters how dry the heat is when it’s over 110°F)
The other factor that directed this story was language content. No cursing. That was surprisingly hard for me. I don’t usually curse that much—I never have. But when I write, I do. If my character feels like someone who’d swear, I don’t hesitate. It was quite an eye-opener for me.
In the end, I think I covered all the bases (sometimes just barely) and still told a story I liked. My sister seems to like it.
Click on the picture/cover to visit Linden Bay Romance and A Hunted Heart for a bit of a summary and a nice excerpt. (It’s a GREAT cover, isn’t it? Another fabulous Beverly Maxwell cover)
I have another book with Linden Bay called Metamorphose. The sequel is not complete—in fact, I planned to have it done quite some time ago. *sigh* I really love the universe Metamorphose is in. I’ll tell you a bit about that one at TRSBlue’s blog later in the week if you like. (and give you a taste of the next in the series)
Take care!
CAPA Nominee - Under Covers by Leigh Ellwood
I'm pleased that my shape-shifter novella, Under Covers, is a finalist for this year's Psyche Award at the CAPAs! Under Covers was my first attempt at shape-shifter romance, and it's bit unconventional compared to other stories I've written. It's first-person, but the story almost commands that point of view given the level of humor involved. Hope you enjoy this excerpt:
Order from Phaze Books.
Libby Hoffman is an undercover reporter with a tabloid paper devoted to the important issues, like vegetables that resemble celebrities and shapeshifters living among the populace. Just as she's had enough with the job, along comes a story that too juicy to resist, one that might launch Libby to work in a real newspaper.
Fellow reporter Mark Grimes proves too much of a distraction for Libby, yet Libby sees the potential for an even bigger story - among other big things - by teaming up with the sexy hunk. When she discovers Mark is not entirely what he seems, Libby realizes she's stumbled upon more than just Pulitzer material.
~
The scent of the cinnamon candy offered to me hadn't the strength to pervade the room and mask the aroma of the obvious afternoon delight my editor, Yale Barnes, had enjoyed with his secretary. The notion of those two--she the poster child for Goth Chicks Anonymous and he the twin brother of Jabba the Hutt--bumping uglies amused as much as it disgusted me. Yale was at least twice her age to boot; proof of God's existence, or not, depending on your view of how things work.
I closed the office door behind me and had to stifle a laugh at the image conjured in my head of Yale's hairy ass bobbing in coitus, Alissa's spindly fishnet legs trying to hook together at the ankles. No, I've not seen the boss' tush myself, but it had to be shaggier than carpet; there certainly wasn't much on his head.
Yale popped three tiny red pellets into his mouth. I could hear them clacking against his teeth in a disjointed melody. "What's so damn funny?" he demanded.
"Nothing." The word came out singsong through twisted lips.
Yale grunted and snapped the proffered tin shut. He gestured me to the free chair before his desk with the other hand. It was going to take more than three mints to mask the flavor of Goth pussy from his wife, but I elected not to be a smartass and suggest that. Snickering in his presence was close enough of a career killer, and for all I knew he was about to give me a raise.
Instead, the first two words out of his mouth were, "Ellyn Grizzard."
Then came the smirk, the Cheshire grin of a cat with a speck of feather caught between his fangs. This was the look that precluded an exclusive for the paper--pure, unadulterated trash.
"No." Not Ellyn Grizzard. Getting a raise would be preferable to digging up dirt and using it to bury Ellyn Grizzard. Getting fired would be preferable.
I felt a pain in the pit of my stomach. Ellyn Grizzard is a revered name in my parents' household. Ellyn Grizzard hosts a daily Christian worship program that is syndicated nationally, though her ministry headquarters is located not far from here. Her devotional books and tapes are reported to sell into the millions. Imagine Oprah genetically spliced with Mother Teresa, add a pink Chanel suit and matching heels, then top the whole thing with a pouf of silver cotton candy for hair. Ellyn Grizzard.
It isn't all a facade, either. Despite the aesthetics, Ellyn Grizzard comes off as very sincere, and I suppose it is possible for some people to look sincere and drive a Mercedes.
Ellyn Grizzard collects canned goods and shoes for poor people. Ellyn Grizzard once sang "The Old Rugged Cross" with Johnny Cash, and used to have lunch with Billy Graham whenever he was in town.
Far as the world was concerned, Ellyn Grizzard walked on water. The devious gleam in Yale's eye insinuated that he wanted me, or rather Libby Hoffman, to grab Ellyn Grizzard by the ankles and pull. Yale wouldn't ask anyone of such a thing, either, if there weren't something concrete to prove.
I cringed. Not Ellyn Grizzard. Scandalous behavior was only supposed to be indicative of male ministers, the Bakkers and Swaggarts of this world. My mother would die to think that one of her idols might be hiding skeletons.
"Ellyn Grizzard," Yale continued, his head tilting at a confident angle, "is a great big bull dyke."
And maybe fucking them, too. Fucking butch, lesbo skeletons.
"No." That I could not believe. I had only seen the woman's show one time, not by choice, and was subjected to a tearful thirty-minute explanation of why all homosexuals were doomed to wade without flotation devices in the Lake of Fire for all eternity unless they rejected temptations of the flesh. Her voice had such conviction; she quoted Scripture to back her claims, and actually thumped the damn Bible she was holding in time to the blinking phone number on the bottom of the screen.
"Yes," Yale insisted.
"No," I said vehemently.
Yale nodded. "She's a lesbo. A queer. A butch bitch. A friend of Dorothy."
"My mother goes to her church."
"She's a breast woman, a carpet muncher, a sister of Sappho. Probably spells woman with a y and has a Melissa Etheridge CD in the dash of that Mercedes she bought with the tithes of a hundred little old ladies."
Did I mention Yale is an atheist? I doubt God believes in him either.
"I don't believe it." I slumped further into the chair.
"Believe it, girlie." Yale stuck his fat hand into an open drawer and produced a tattered envelope. "Got a hot tip that Miss Holier Than All of Us has been slumming the local dyke bars looking for the love that dare not speak its name."
"She better hope nobody speaks it on her show. It's live, you know, they can't edit it out," I muttered. This was something I could not picture. Ellyn Grizzard could have been one of the Golden Girls, if any of them had developed a habit of punctuating their speech with Praise Jesus in every other sentence. To hear this bit of alleged news was akin to learning that my eighty-year-old grandmother liked eating pussy. I shivered at the unbidden image burning in the back of my skull.
"I hope not, either. If this lead pans out, I want the Spectator to scoop it before anyone else." He upturned the envelope and three thin matchbooks fell to the desk. One was black and embossed in gold with a profile of a naked woman, not unlike she of the truck mud flap variety. "Your cell has a camera feature, right?"
"Yeah, but--"
"Check the batteries and hit the bars. Try not to look conspicuous," Yale said.
I rolled my eyes. I only made my living as an undercover reporter, yet Yale never failed to coach me on a job I could do better than he had ever done. This is why Yale is the editor--he sits behind his desk and dictates. Then he shifts in his chair to allow Alissa deeper access when she's kneeling underneath to suck his cock.
"Good thing I had my khakis pressed," I muttered, but he wasn't listening.
"I'd like to have seven inches of copy before we go to press. Get to it."
I waited for the inevitable joke about Ellyn Grizzard needing a good seven inches herself, but Yale simply folded his hands on the desk. No jokes, that meant business.
I slid the matchbooks toward me and turned them in my palm. In three days I had to patronize such aptly named establishments as the Grecian Urn, Club Virgo, and Uncle Marge's, all because of a tip claiming that maybe some senior citizen evangelist was grazing on the other side of the fence, fields in which I had never thought to step. Surely our readership would be more interested in seeing pictures of a sweet potato that looked like Paris Hilton. We had three leads submitted just this morning.
The look on Yale's face, the silent, urgent command that I take my assignment and get the hell out of his office, told me different. He was a man of few words, preferring to reserve his energy for the computer keyboard, and apparently for whatever he did with Alissa. My rebuttal went unspoken as his chubby finger pointed the way out his door to these greener pastures inhabited by women with crew cuts and Birkenstock sandals.
Another CAPA Nominee: Survival of the Fairest
Hi everyone!
It's my first time here. Like several others, I was inspired to join in the fun at the TRS blog because my novel SURVIVAL OF THE FAIREST was nominated for a CAPA Award in the Fantasy Romance category. TRS's helpful review of SOTF by Diane Mason is here.
SOTF is the story of Princess Talista of the fairy clan Serendipity, who's been sent to a remote forest in humanspace for mandatory survival training. But since the princess is in a romance novel and has red hair, she's kind of a pill. It's hardly a shock when she goes AWOL shortly after reaching humanspace.
I mean, really. Two weeks without magic? If she has to go native, she's not going to do it sleeping in a tent. What better place than Las Vegas to learn to live like a human?
Once she arrives in the city, Tali runs into sexy stage magician Jake Story in a meet-cute that involves danger, excitement, money and heat (it's Vegas in the summer, of course there's heat!). What more could you ask? Their attraction is instant and electric…and Tali senses there’s more to Jake’s show than flashy tricks.
As for Jake, he always knew he was different, even before he developed an unusual flair for hypnotism. He spends half his time taking care of his eccentric mother and grandfather and the other half practicing his craft. He has no trouble mesmerizing Tali when she comes to his show, but the lights that appear around them when they kiss weren’t part of the program.
When the authorities from Tali’s homeland track the missing princess to Vegas, Jake and Tali end up on the run. In between magical experiments, evil gnomes and astonishing sex, Tali learns what it really means to be human—by falling in lust, followed closely by love.
But Tali’s not human. And Jake doesn’t believe in fairies. The truth will either bind them together—or tear the fairy realm apart.
Since the book is from Samhain, it includes the helpful warning that this title contains the following: Intoxicating sex, misuse of magic, gorgeous cross-dressers and flesh-eating gnomes.
If you're curious to read an excerpt of SOTF, I've got them at my site here. Now technicially, my current contest is for a copy of my Red Sage interactive erotic romance, Megan's Choice, but the winner also gets a handmade crocheted gnome charm to ward off evil, which stemmed from the pages of SOTF.
***
SOTF is my second published novel, and the CAPA is the first time my fiction has been nominated for an award. Whether or not it wins in the end doesn't matter because I'll always remember that somebody thought it was good enough to be on the ballot. I hope more CAPA nominees will continue to tell us a little about their books, and I look forward to the awards ceremony on February 14, 2009!
The New Year
Betrayals, my first contemporary romantic suspense novel, has been nominated for a CAPA award. I am really excited about this since it is my first nomination.
This book has done really well. Not only a CAPA nomination, but three 5 reviews. The strange thing was that I really was uncertain about this book. I guess an author is not always the best judge of her own work. I was very nervous when it first came out.
Of course having my editor, EJ, send it back to me with the comment, “It is not up to your usual standards. Fix it.” probably didn’t help my overall sense of security. I fixed it, she edited it, and it turned out great. Thank goodness for editors that keep me honest.
Being nominated for a CAPA started off my new year with a bang. Being January, it is a time to look forward to what needs to be done. I make a large “to-do” list rather than resolutions. I did make one resolution – remain injury free. I have managed to be injured since September in one form or another. So far, except for the smashed toe where the dog stepped on me, that one is gong well.
Writing goals are the main concern for the new year. I have too many projects that I want or need to finish. I had lunch with my critique partner, Debra, last Saturday. Her question was, “What are you going to concentrate on?” She has her first project going. Me – I have three of them going and they all need to be done yesterday and now I want to start a new project. I have a trailer, a short story and a book nearly finished. Those will be the first on the list. My underground railroad story, Freedom’s Treasure, a sequel to The River’s Treasure, has to be done. Poor Sam has been left stranded in more places while I got sidetracked elsewhere. He will be so happy to get to the end of the story. (However, at the moment he is in bed with the heroine, so he isn’t squawking too much.)
I hope everyone is finding the new year wonderful. It holds such promise.
Surviving winter
Hi everyone!
I hope you all are doing well today. As I write this it is just after 6 a.m. and I'm huddled up in my bed, wrapped in quilts and girded by three little dogs whom I suspect love my bed almost as much as they love me. This morning the temperature has dropped into the 20's, which is unusual weather for Florida. While it's not good for the orange trees, it's really a great time for settling back with a cup of hot cocoa and a good book.
I can remember back when I was a kid in Illinois and I would pray for snow days just so school would be cancelled and I could curl up under a blanket and read the whole day away. It would be hot tomato soup with grilled cheese sanddwiches for lunch, me cuddled up on the sofa with a book in hand ready tp set out on another fantastic adventure. It didn't matter that there were 15 foot drifts of snow and bone chilling winds outside, I was warm and life was good. Just by opening a book I could travel back to ancient Rome, expeerience real historical events, or even transport myself into some future time, depending on what I was reading at the time. Yep. Reading for me was the ultimate survival kit for those long, frigid winters.
These days, especially in Florida, there are no snow days, just work and raising a family, and crunching in time to write. But for those of you who have a bit of time and are hoping to survive the low temperatures, it just so happens that I have a couple of books coming out soon which I hope you will consider when you 'hunker down' for the rest of these chilly winter days and nights.
Although it's currently available as a download, my novel Always and Forever will be out soon in print as well. It's the story of a wounded English Regency earl who's kidnapped by a cantankerous ghost and taken back through time to rescue a laird's daughter from a forced marriage to a cruel clan cheiftain. Magic and passion ignite for this unlikely couple who learn that the power of love is stronger than even time itself. Currently available as an ebook, Always and Forever can be found at: www.resplendencepublishing.com.
My other story coming out on February 27th is the fourth installment of my erotic historical western romance series titled Ride A Cowboy 4: Roped and Tied. Set in the 1880's west Texas, it's the continuing story of Wade MacReynolds, a desperite cowboy who trades one night of passion each week for water rights with the local brothel madam, Lily Barnett. In this story, Wade is determined to convince Lily that she can trust him to return to her after his cattle drive. You can find the first 3 books in this series at: www.cobblestone-press.com.
Well, I've got to run. Here's to warmer temperatures and an early spring. In the meantime I'm sending you all warm thoughts and good wishes! Happy Reading!
Middle Ground
I tend to go full tilt when I am really into a project. The story follows me in my every moment. Sometimes everything flows so well. The characters and plot work. The words just come and all gel seamlessly. In writing when you reach the middle of a book or as I like to say middle ground you have to keep the story going forward. When I reach the middle ground I know that I need to start thinking of what I will do to get to the final ground - wrap up the story. There is a lot to do between the middle ground and the final ground. Tying up all the lose ends and making sure the story continues to flow to that cumulating point.
That’s where I am now middle ground and working to the final ground. I’m right smack dab in the middle ground of my current work in progress. This story flowed so well and fast I almost missed that I was at middle ground and ready to start my slide into final ground. So now that I became aware of where I was in my book I am planning my steps to my final ground. Ahh… the final ground where you get to say the end and know the story is done. At least until you start editing and revisions. LOL.
So I am off to continue with my move to final ground.
Free Reads...
Well this is my first time guest blogging here, and since I'm a hit or miss blogger on my best days, I figured I'd better get over here and post something. LOL I thought it would be nice to post on here about a few of my free reads. I have two free reads up on Free Romance Fiction Lilly's Choice is a scifi menage and Frost, Flame and Flower is a holiday fantasy story. I have a tendency to write in a variety of genres from sweet to erotic depending on my mood, and these two stories are certainly no exception to that rule. I have another free read that can be found on my website, this one is a sweet Native American fantasy/time travel romance called The Mark of the Guardian. You can just click on the cover it opens a PDF right up that you can read online or save to your computer to read later.
Want even more free reads?? Believe it or not I have a few more in the files section of my newsletter group Regina's Universe.
Success
If this seems familiar, it's because I got my dates mixed up and accidentally posted on Monday! I realized my mistake and removed the post. Nothing like a faux pas your first time out!
My dh and I were eating breakfast at our usual Sunday spot last weekend. A lot of people come in and eat alone. This week a lovely middle-aged woman was there, alone. Though she was dressed casually, her clothes and hair were stylish, and when she left, she got into a sportscar. The dh leaned over and said, “That’s success.” He added that he would rather have me than a billion dollars (everyone all together now… “Awww.”)
We continued our discussion of what makes someone successful. Is it having a book published, or having four releases a year? Is it having a home and a happy family? Is it finishing a book, or reaching a goal? Is it winning awards or making money? Is it changing someone’s life, or doing a job you love? When I ask myself those questions, I feel like a success. How do you measure your success?
In Hot Shot, Peyton and Gabe have different definitions of success. For Gabe, fighting wildfires is what he loves to do. Peyton sees him as a success because he is the best at what he does. Her definition labels him as a hero, a label he doesn’t want because of the expectations associated with the word. His problem with her definition of him is only part of the conflict between them as they fight fires and hunt down an arsonist in Hot Shot from Samhain Publishing, available now in ebook, and next month in paperback.
Those Dreamy Jobs
When my husband first told me I should write full time, I thought to myself, What is he crazy?
But I listened to him and nearly seven years ago, I started defining a new career for myself. My dream job as I put it then.
But did my dream come true? Absolutely not. I thought I'd have uninterrupted days where I would float around in sweats, nimlbed fingered, typing away. Somehow the world would get the message, Linda is writing, and leave me alone to create for hours on end until I was too tired, too hungry, or too out of ideas.
The world did not get it. But I did. The straight and narrow path to my dream job was twisted to say the least. There were still phone calls to make, beds to change and washing to be done. Life's little interruption, which bite when you least suspect. No clean underwear is a problem in my opinion!
Writers find a way. I wrote and kept it up until a book was produced and then sold, which begat another, and now a third.
As my third book, The Wine Seekers hits the retail world, I realize dream jobs are just that. Writing full time has its ups and downs just like any other. But it is a career I love in spite of the lack of clean underwear from time to time. And I wouldn't give up my dream job for anything.
Best to you all Linda Bilodeauwww.lindabilodeau.comThe Wine Seekers is now available on Amazon.com for just $11.65. Help an author. Ask your local library to stock The Wine Seekers along with your other favorite books. The Wine Seekers ISBN 978-0-9815573-7-3
Body Language
It’s my first TRS Blog *g* Let me start by saying how excited I am that our Ellora's Cave Sapphire story…Winning Bess has been nominated for a CAPA in the Erotic Historical category!!
One of my favorite procrastination pastimes is to read just about anything. But I can’t always consider it procrastinating because sometimes what I read is research. I am always looking for ways to add depth to characters and improve love scenes. I recently ordered a new book I read about in Woman’s World Magazine called The Body Language of Flirting, Dating, and Romance by Raymond McGraime. I’ll share a bit about what I learned in the article and a scene I made up using some of it.
How a character moves and expresses himself makes them more real, helps the reader understand them and become pulled into the story more. Helps us understand people more in general. *g* So why not write the body language in too.
Take his hands and where he touches her. If he touches the side of her arm, it’s a friendly, compassionate gesture. If he grips her elbow he may be trying to manipulate her. And where does every alpha male’s hand end up? (*gasp* well there, too, eventually) *g* But I was talking about the shoulder. Placing his hand on her shoulder is a sign of dominance, possession.
On a side note, did anyone see a piece on the news last night about a study on the length of ring fingers? Apparently if a man’s ring finger is longer than his index finger he was exposed high amounts of testosterone in the womb. It signals an assertive personality and greater fertility *blink* (After four children, I didn’t even check my Italian alpha hubby’s hand *g*)
I never thought a person’s hair revealed much but according to the article it does. Parted on the left indicates someone who is logical and assertive. Parted on the right, they are a creative nonconformist. Then, in the center or no part they are balanced and good at keeping relationships. (*g* My husband of nearly 20 years has no part! Just black curls.). They didn’t mention bald men. I am guessing they are a mystery to be solved *g*
They say the eyes are the window to the soul. And they do reveal a lot about the person. When a person is interested or feeling positive about something his pupils dilate. Now it’s up to the heroine to decide if he is interested in what she is saying, her body, or maybe if she is lucky a combo of both. Don’t read anything into keeping eye contact though, the research showed direct eye contact is made only 20% of the time.
His smile is something that always draws her attention. If both sides turn up, it is a sincere smile. If they go straight out, it’s called “fake facing” and there’s a chance he’s a phony. Keep watching and see which type dominates to see how sincere he is.
Now the chin. It’s not so much the physical look of the chin, although we all love a man with a strong chin. It’s how he touches it. If he taps or touches it with his finger tips he is a good listener. But if he rests his fingers against it and his mouth, he is either skeptical of you or he could be lying.
As for the rest of the body and how we use it to flirt or attract a mate… Once I get the book I will stop back and let you know. If you have any body language knowledge you’d like to share drop me a note. Like I said I am always looking to give my characters more realistic behaviors.
The scene…
“You have five minutes to convince me, Miss Dowd.” Chase Hughes leaned back in his chair. His fingers were steepled and pressed to his lips. His eyes looked her over then moved to the clock on the wall.
She knew he was skeptical and not even sure he would listen. But she had to make him listen, she needed his financial backing. She had five minutes to turn a skeptic into a believer. “Every Urban myth, every legend, has some basis of truth behind it, Mr. Hughes. I have gone over my father’s research and done some of my own. I am telling you there is truth behind this one. Truth that could make us both very wealthy.”
His hands moved away from his mouth, his fingers now at his chin. Ah, a spark of interest. Speak to the bank balance. It’s always a good place to start with wealthy men. They always seem to want more… forget about the passion, the satisfaction of knowing the truth. As she explained what she had found, he leaned forward. By the end of the five minutes, his elbows rested on the table. His green eyes had darkened as if they were devouring every word on the pages she’d spread out. She had him.
He looked up. “Miss Dowd, I believe we might be able to work something out. I do have a few conditions…” He smiled, the corners of his mouth turned up to reveal a deep dimple on the left side. It seemed the perfect exclamation point to the nest of dark curls atop his head.
A rush of excitement jolted through her. It was followed by an unbidden shadow of disappointment. If only she could grab a man, like Chase Hughes’, attention for more than her research…No, Keara, this is one time you should be happy he only wants you for your mind. And what were these conditions?
Hanging At The Airport With Kimber Chin
December and January is a busy travel time for me. The good fortune of having loved ones all over the world combined with the start of convention season (with the Consumer Electronics Show in Vegas) means hours spent at airports. Some people grumble about the wait to board. I don't. I LOVE it.
The airport is a perfect spot to people watch. When you have thousands of people thrown together, some of them single, you're sure to see at least one budding romance at each gate.
$
The man is all teched out. He has the laptop open, the blackberry on the seat next to him, a blinking blue earpiece accessorizing his closely cropped dark hair. His fingers are flying over the keyboard, completely focused on his screen.
"Excuse me." A soft voice pierces his concentration. "Do you mind if…" She waves a plug over the outlet.
"No, no, go ahead." He scrambles into action, gathering up his blackberry, making space so the petite brunette can sit down.
"Thank you." A shy smile as she settles in. "Didn't have time on the last transfer." The woman leans over, her pony-tailed hair slipping forward.
"Here, let me." He takes the plug from her, their fingers entwining for only a second.
"Thank you." Her voice more breezy this time. The woman flips her laptop open. "How's the connection?"
He winced. "Slow but I 'spect better than Cincinnati."
A nervous laugh. "I'm sure. Doesn't matter though. Cincinnati is home base."
His head turns from his screen. "Mine too."
"Really?" Her cheeks are flushed.
A corner of his mouth jerks upwards. "Really."
$
Strangely enough I don't have an airport scene in Breach Of Trust, my first contemporary romance, but I make up for that with Invisible, my February release. As Invisible is a contemporary treasure hunt, Hagen and Maeve are constantly on the move.
So have you witnessed any romance at the airport? Perhaps a love at first sight spotting?
The Good Girls of Washington
Last night I drove into Washington, DC and immediately got lost. I made the error of following the printed MapQuest directions and was unable to follow the sign I saw a nanosecond late that said "Amtrak take Mass Ave. Exit."
I am a native born Washingtonian, lived my childhood in the close-in Maryland suburbs and have lived all over Northern Virginia my adult life. I've never worked in DC, though I did take a landscape design course at George Washington University a few years back. At night. And I got lost every time I went to class.
DC is quirky because you do have recognizable landmarks, but there are also seemingly random street closures, one-way streets and because of the lighting showcasing the monuments, the street signs are invisible at night. I could not read one street name last night. I needed to pick up my son from Union Station and I knew it was near the capitol, but it was quite an adventure trying to get close enough without inadvertently getting into the secured zone.
I have written a series of books I call the Good Girls of Washington. The first one is Hundred Dollar Bill, set in 1945. Roosevelt is President. World War II is coming to a head. Thieves, spies and other wise guys are working everywhere…including in branches of the U.S. government.
Chloe Lambert is a sweet little thing whom mothers love to love and sailors love to pinch. She's also a sharp-tongued Secret Service agent—a Secret Service agent who has been framed for murder by a band of counterfeiters.
Mike Taurus, also an agent, is tough as nails, cool as ice and devilishly handsome. He also has a past with Chloe. As the two of them make a mad dash from Washington, D.C. to Miami Beach, they'll stop at nothing to solve this monumental caper. It's a made-for-the-movies adventure that Alfred Hitchcock could only wish he'd dreamed up himself!
Have you driven in Washington, DC?
Are you going to attend the Inauguration?
How about RWA National in DC this summer?
Mid Season Premieres
I’ve mentioned a few times at various places one of my fav things besides reading and writing is TV and Movies. I have a feature on my own blog I did last year called TV Pleasures. I plan on starting again next week and changing the titled a little. I’ll be calling it TV/Movie Pleasures.
Today I’m exploring my TV pleasures. I am looking forward to the mid season premieres of Monk and Psych (yeah they start tonight). Also can’t wait for The Closer which starts later this month. I enjoy Detective Sanchez and am really hoping they don’t kill him off. They left a cliff hanger last season. I’m counting down the days until I can find out what happens.
A friend of mine also tapped the whole season on True Blood for me. I plan real soon to have a weekend of watching the season. I heard mixed things about True Blood but watching to form my own thoughts.
Now my other fav kind of shows - reality shows. I love some of them. There are so many and some of them just don’t catch me. I’m really enjoying Superstars of Dance. Seeing the various countries competing, their countries style of dance, and seeing how the professionals do it. It was wow. Fabulous.
What shows are you watching or looking forward too?
Beautiful Places
I’m often asked where my story ideas spring from. An interesting face, lyrical tune, or unusual place name can send my mind racing away with a new story idea. But if I had to choose one type of stimuli that inspires me the most, I’d choose places.
When I visit historic houses and ancient villages or towns I always leave dying to use them as settings in my books. Although I write paranormal romance and not historical romance, the sense of history that oozes from the very stones of the buildings sets my blood racing. I’m lucky that living in England I have access to many ancient buildings and acres of mystical countryside. I love walking through a medieval manor house seeing the swords and armor on the walls, walking across flagstone floors knowing I’m treading in the footsteps of people long dead who walked their centuries earlier. Once I have a story idea, I read about myths, legends, and folk law to give me ideas on how to blend paranormal elements with the setting.
My debut book The Magic Knot (due for release by Dorchester Love Spell on Jan 27) is partly set in Ireland. My inspiration for the Irish fairy queen’s mansion that features in the story is a beautiful Palladian mansion called Powerscourt. The house stands in 47 acres of gardens within the Wicklow Mountains near Enniskerry, a few miles from Dublin. A castle has stood on the site since 1300. The current structure was refurbished in 1974 in preparation for opening to the public. Tragically, on completion of the work, the house was gutted by fire before it could open. The pictures of the beautiful house engulfed in fire brought tears to my eyes. Due to the cost, only the exterior was restored again. The interior now houses craft shops. Despite this, the house and gardens are magical.
My inspiration for the setting of the Cornish pub where Niall O’Connor, the hero of The Magic Knot, lives is a little Cornish village called Lerryn. My husband and I had a wonderful weekend trip exploring the tiny villages of Cornwall and the beautiful village on the River Lerryn is so magical, I quite believe fairies live there.
The Magic Knot.
Back cover blurb:
HE’S A BIKER WITH AN ATTITUDE
What woman wouldn’t be attracted to Niall O’Connor’s soft Irish brogue and dark good looks? But Rosenwyn Tremain must find her father, and she isn’t going to let a sexy, stubborn Irishman and his motorcycle distract her. Rose’s intuition tells her he’s hiding something, a secret even the cards cannot divine. Her tarot deck always reads true, but how can one man represent both Justice and Betrayal?
SHE’S A WOMAN ON A MISSION
Magic. Niall’s body tingles with it when he finds the woman snooping in his room. Rosenwyn might believe she’s a no-nonsense accountant, but her essence whispers to him of ancient fairy magic that enslaves even as it seduces. Her heritage could endanger those he’d die to protect, but her powers and her passion, if properly awakened, might be the only thing that can save both their families, vanquish a fairy queen bent on revenge, and fulfill a prophecy that will bind their hearts together with…The Magic Knot
New Year. Clean Slate. New Me?
By now, even though it’s only January 3rd, most of us are tired of hearing about New Year Resolutions. I have to agree.
So this year, instead of making the usual resolutions I make, such as watching what I eat, spending less money, not working too hard, (all good ideas, mind you,) I decided to try something entirely different. I’m not going to make any resolutions, which doesn’t mean I won’t do any of those things, but instead of focusing on just them, I want to look at each day as if I’m facing a clean slate, full of promise.
Anything’s possible.
For writers this is a familiar situation to find oneself in. When we start a new book, we have an idea of where we want the story to go, (in this case, our life), then we type that first word, followed by the next and the next, and before we know it, we’ve finished an entire chapter.
So today, and tomorrow and the day after that, I’ll get out of bed, face the day and its challenges and who knows where it will lead me.
How about you? Care to join me on this adventure called life?
All the best…
To Australia or Not?
I'm a proud Aussie. Anyone familiar with me has probably worked that out by now. The words "fair dinkum", "crikey", "struth", "bloody hell" and "by jingoes" regularly pepper my conversations. There are some Australians who suffer what is known Down Under as the "cultural cringe" - a distinct distaste for the more Aussie elements of our heritage. I'm not one of them. I grew up in the outback and love who I am. What better way to say someone is not pleasant to look at than to say "Jeez, they're as ugly as a hat full of a*se-holes!"
Okay, maybe there are better ways, but the Aussie way seems, to me at least, to have more visual kick and really, what is language for than to plant images in the minds of those we talk to, no matter the medium?
Having said that, I find myself in a conundrum. When does my love-affair with my own country become too much for my readers? My last two books have Australian heroes. They say "fair dinkum" often. I've written three books set in Australia (well, four, actually, but one is still looking for a home) and have another three planned. Each time I write a story set Down Under I research the location in great detail, visiting it often if I can, spending hours on the net if I can't (contrary to belief, Australia is a bloody big place. I can not drive to the Outback or the Great Barrier Reef in a day). Every time I begin to write, I fall in love all over again with my home country and want my readers to do so as well.
But should I?
Judging by the lukewarm reception to Baz Luhrman's "Australia" (which is a beautiful, wonderful film, btw) anything Aussie isn't necessarily warmly welcomed in the rest of the world. What does this mean for me? Does this mean I should transplant my heroes and heroines to far off distant shores and planets? Should I return to my sci-fi roots?
My latest release, Savage Retribution, sees an Irish werewolf fighting for his life in Sydney, Australia. I had lots of fun writing this book. I wanted to show what Australia and Australians are like from a non-Aussie's point of view. The heroine, Regan, is an animal rights activist who rescues a wolf from a notorious science lab only to discover the wolf is really a man...well, a werewolf. Suffice to say, she's a little surprised. More so when said man forces her to join him on a mad dash that takes them from Bondi Beach to the opulent suburbs on Sydney's North Shore, in an attempt to escape the scientist/werewolf hellbent on destroying them both. There's lots of Sydney locations, lots of Aussie characters and lots and lots of "bloody hells", "fair dinkums" and the odd "crikey". I'd planned two sequels, both set in Australia (one in the Outback, one in the lush rain forest state of Tasmania) but should I set them somewhere else?
Or should I say, to hell with it all? They say writers should write what they love, and I love Australia, I really do. So, I guess that answers my problem, doesn't it.
To Australia or not? Well, in the immortal words of Men At Work...I come from the land Down Under... and I'm proud of it *grin*
An animal rights activist is about to get a crash course in werewolves. One she may not survive.
Lone Irish werewolf Declan O’Connell has lost everything—his family, his clan, even his freedom—to his arch-rival, Nathan Epoc. The head of an underground werewolf clan and a brilliant scientist, Epoc plans to use Declan to create a super-wolf, a creature capable of shifting the balance of power in the lycanthrope world. But Epoc’s plans are about to be thwarted.
Regan Thomas, a determined animal rights activist, rescues what she thinks is an ordinary wolf from his notorious animal testing facility in Sydney, Australia. She gets more than she bargained for when the wolf turns into an extremely hunky, extremely naked man who immediately drags her into a world where the clash between two opposing werewolf clans could spell the end of humankind.
Declan has survived without a clan for more years than he cares to remember, but sexy Regan stirs up all his fierce, alpha-wolf instincts. Now Declan has one last chance at revenge. But can he keep Regan alive, and resist the overwhelming attraction between them, long enough to stop Epoc?
Summer in Australia has never been this hot… or this dangerous.
To stand-alone or not to stand-alone...
That was the question while I was writing my latest release, A Ghost of a Chance: Legends, Book 2.
Not wanting to frustrate readers who might happen across book 2 first, I tried my best to make AGOAC, the sequel to Beaudry's Ghost, a book that would make perfect sense no matter what order in which the books were read.
But when you've got a hero & heroine from book 1 who haven't quite played out the very end of their story yet - and insist on sticking their noses into the plot of book 2, thus becoming inextricable players in it - what's a writer to do?
Put hands to the keyboard and hang on for the ride.
The result was a book that could be read first, but the reader's enjoyment will be deeper if she reads book 1 first. Then you'll know why the emotional arc of the starts out at such a high point and goes up from there. While book 1 ended in a HEA for the main characters, there were three secondary characters left dangling.
Book 2, A Ghost of a Chance, definitely ends in another HEA. It's a romance, right? But there are still two characters hanging out there in the breeze. Not the least of which, a mysterious younger brother who has only shown his face once but persistently haunts my dreams.
Sigh.
Only one way to find out who this shadowy figure is. Put my hands on the keyboard.
Following is the blurb and links to an excerpt for my latest release, A Ghost of a Chance: Legends, Book 2. Happy reading!
One life hangs on the thread of her imagination…
Legends, Book 2: Sequel to the award-winning Beaudry’s Ghost.
Troy Brannon is a ghost with no time for heaven. Thanks to his well-intentioned meddling, he’s got a missing soul on his hands. Fortunately he’s learned a skill no well-behaved spirit should have—the ability to zip through time and space.
A side trip to revive a drowning woman should’ve been simple. But the moment he locks lips with Carey Magennis, she generates an inner fire he’s never felt before, alive or dead—and his ability to time travel disappears.
When the rising tide closes over Carey’s head, it’s the end—but only of life as she knows it. She wakes up haunted by the idea she no longer fits in, and by the sexy, lion-hearted ghost of the man who saved her. No one wants to hear about the strange things that have been happening to her since her near-death experience, least of all her image-conscious fiancĆ©.
Troy realizes Carey accidentally stole his gift—and she has no idea the danger she’s in. Wherever her imagination takes her, she goes with it. Literally. Plus, that fiancĆ© of hers has an agenda that doesn’t include her survival.
Saving her will be as dangerous to his mission as she is to his heart.
This title contains some gratuitous bad language; the sex of your dreams with a professional bad-ass hero; bloody Civil War battles; astral joy rides; and a heroine who “gets it” in more ways than one!
Logan Knight is staying with his grandfather while recuperating from an accident that killed his two best friends. He needs time to heal his body and his heart from the tragedy. Libby Turner is on a hell bent mission to keep her grandmother out of an assisted living facility, even if it means masquerading as a seventy-year-old woman.
From the moment the two meet sparks fly, and they can't keep their hands off each other. The only problem is, neither is looking for a relationship, so they come up with an outrageous solution. Can they stick to their plan of keeping their relationship strictly sexual, or do they give in to the overwhelming love that threatens to claim their hearts? Whiskey Creek Press Torrid
It's All In The Jeans is a cute, sweet, erotic story with a host of wonderful and charming characters. Logan's scars from his injuries are not only skin deep, but the tantalizing Libby destroys his control.
She's compassionate, sassy, and her caring of her grandmother is heartwarming. She's a woman that knows what she wants and isn't afraid to grab it. The passion between these two is volatile and explosive. This is a superb, truly romantic story.
A Wolf by any other name would be as ferocious
I celebrated the New Year with a new release on December 30th, Settler's Mine 4: The Wolf.
Last year, when I was making my New Year's Resolutions, I made one to stretch myself as a writer. To spread my wings as it were. I had designs on this happening in particular ways.
Only the way I expected, didn't happen. Did I meet that resolution? Yes, I think I did. But it didn't happen the way I expected. Instead, I spread my wings through a number of different ways, including writing a story that's different than anything I've written before.
The Wolf plays with D/s and bondage themes. Which I've done before. But not to the extent or as blatantly as I've done in this story. Clyde and Angelica stretched my skills as a writer because their story was so different. Yes, it's still a romance. But the combining elements are very diverse and required careful handling.
I had another story that helped make me feel as though I've stretched myself as a writer, meeting my goal for the year. Again, it was just not the way I expected to meet that goal.
Sometimes what you want to happen, happens in wholly unexpected ways. And it resulted in a great story (I hope *crosses fingers*).
The Wolf's Blurb:
When Clyde goes into heat, no one else will do but one of his own
secretive race, the Wolftons.
Angelica isn't expecting anyone when she hears a shuttle arrive. To her surprise, it's a virile Wolfton, who asks a single question, "Are you a whore?"
Her answer of "yes" plunges her into an erotic fantasy where her every whim is indulged. With Clyde, she takes the role of submissive to new heights.
Clyde knew he'd find sex to ease his urges, but Angelica's more than a willing body. She's his mate. And with his scent all over her, she's never going to be safe from the bounty hunters after his hide. Now this Wolf will have to outrun his pack to Settler's Mine to claim and keep his mate.
