Shivers

My name is Annmarie Ortega and I am in a Paranormal anthology at Resplendence Publishing called Shivers. There are four short stories and the book is available in ebook and print. The other authors are Catherine Chernow, Destiny Blaine, and Melinda Barron.

Deal With the Devil by Annmarie Ortega:

Marie knows she deserves the promotion she's applied for, but thanks to her co-worker (the boss' girlfriend), she knows she'll never get it. Sitting alone at a bar the night before she learns who will actually land the job, she meets a mysterious and devilishly sexy stranger who promises that all her dreams will be fulfilled...if they make a deal.

Before the night is over, Marie signs a contract with Nate in her own blood. Nate doesn't want her soul in return for fulfilling all that she desires. He wants her body...whenever and wherever he demands.

Office fantasies

In this day and age there are strict rules about how one should conduct themselves at the office. Proper behavior and treating your co-workers with respect is something one should always practice. Men and women shouldn't have to deal with unwanted advances at the workplace. But...what if your co-worker was drop-dead gorgeous and you found yourself slipping off to fantasy land whenever he walked by? What if you could live out your fantasy for a day?

Here's my free read Sex in a Suit, where Jocelyn Tanner does just that:

Enjoy!

Favorite Authors & the Author in Me

As a published author myself, I’ve been asked on many occasions who my favorite author is…who has inspired me most. Time and time again, I have responded—Jane Austen. It seems like an easy response, almost cliché. I mean how many times have you heard this same exact response from several authors?? But let me reiterate—I really love Jane Austen and if you want to tick me off spell her name A-U-S-T-I-N. It’s AUSTEN! Get it right people. But now I digress.

When we choose a favorite author, I suppose it is because we love their writing and can’t get enough of it, and as authors wish we were as good as they. That is exactly how I feel about Jane. Miss Austen had a special gift, a talent if you will, not just in writing but in knowing people. Think about it. Here is this prim and proper (though some would argue this point) Regency era woman, unmarried, and coming from the middle of the social pool—and she has this uncanny ability to write the most terrific characters. She wrote characters to hate, laugh at, and fall in love with. Some of the other greats of classic literature also had this remarkable ability—Dickens for instance and Shakespeare. Think of their casts of characters that once read will never be forgotten.

For me, a good book is dependant on well-written characters far more than plot. Yes, we need a telling plot to keep the story going, but it is the characters which take us on the journey. I have only begun my adventure as a published author, having had my first book published in December 2006 and number nine coming later this winter; but when I come to the end of this excursion, I hope there is someone out there who can say ‘Cindy Green wrote characters that I will never forget..’

If there is one thing I have learned from Jane Austen it is to observe people and try to make my characters as real as possible. Why is it that the likes of JA and Shakespeare are still read and revered to this very day? It’s because they wrote people that are true of the human spirit which will never change. That is the kind of author I want to be when I grow up. I want to make you laugh, make you think and in the end make you remember.

Let me take the time now to introduce you to my newest character, Lucinda Kelley, from my latest release, Meeting Mr. Right Online. Available now from By Grace Publishing.

The Opening:

Good evening, this is Amber Heffernan reporting live for Channel 11 entertainment news outside the beautiful Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City. In just a few minutes, the glamorous Lucinda Kelley will emerge with her new husband, that handsome British financier. This couple has been in the media limelight since they first started seeing each other almost six months ago, outshining all of the other popular Hollywood pairs. The bride was married today in a Vera Wang strapless scoop-neck wedding gown, and I’m told she looked absolutely stunning. When the couple exits the hotel, they will travel to JFK International Airport to board the family jet to Jamaica where the twosome plan to depart for a two week honeymoon. After that they will settle into their Malibu home in California where Lucinda produces her award winning television sitcom…

The computer beeped letting me know it had finally booted up, and there I was, daydreaming again. I really had to stop doing that. I clicked the button once more, hoping this time it would be there. I held my breath for the few seconds it took to check my email messages, feeling that depressed, empty sensation yet again when I didn’t see it. Rubbing my forehead, I closed my eyes. This was absolutely ridiculous. Why did I torture myself so?

Read two more excerpts and watch the book trailer on my website.

Pretending to be newlyweds is a dangerous game…particularly if you’re falling in love.

FBI Special Agent in Charge Caitlin Chaney believes in doing things strictly by the book. It’s the only way to prove she’s earned her rank despite her father’s position in the federal government. Just her luck, she’s been teamed with an agent who’s known for following his instincts, not the rules. To her way of thinking, Agent Jake LeFevre is a screw up and bound to trash her operation—and career.

Jake is used to running undercover ops his way, and he’s not too happy with his new boss—an accountant, no less, whose undercover experience is limited at best. He needs a partner who can hold her own, not a prima donna.

At first the sparks that fly between them aren’t the good kind. From the very beginning, their cover as madly-in-love newlyweds at a New Orleans casino is tested to the max. But as they work together to find a missing whistleblower in a money-laundering scheme, their admiration grows to respect—and something more.

Then Jake discovers the casino CFO is someone he loved as a teenager. If the woman recognizes him, things could go sideways, and fast—and in a way that could leave their bodies—and hearts—in pieces.

Warning, this title contains the following: hot nekkid shower sex, an evil voodoo priestess, grisly remains in the bayou, graphic language, and violence.

Love with a Twist

The Naughty Ladies of Nice
Book Three
French Twist
Eternal Press
$2.95

BLURB:
Interpol agent Claudette D’Laquois is on the run. Dull Uncle Paul and his rundown chateau in Nice, France are her only safe haven…but she never planned on the delectable estate manager who is even more dangerous than the Russian mob boss who wants her dead.

Three weeks of overseeing operations at his friend’s orchard seems like the ideal vacation to CPA Don Hobbs. And so it was—until a French sex goddess pulls him into a world of drugs, intrigue, and erotic fantasy.

RED ROSES FOR AUTHORS REVIEW:
No one does short, sexy books better than Sloane Taylor! She combines sensual romance with mystery and intrigue and comes up smelling of roses. Sweet and sassy. Five red roses, Morna

EXCERPT:
“Baby, you’re up to your beautiful brown eyes in it.” Don leaned against the office door frame, his arms crossed over his chest as if that could control his temper.

Claudette gave him one of her typical French sniffs. Chicks from Marseille had one hell of a disposition, he decided for about the twentieth time since he’d been forced to work with her.

“Bonjour, Monsieur Hobbs. It is nice to see you, too, this beautiful morning.” Again with the sniff. He’d enjoy nothing more than spanking the firm ass of his unwanted assistant, but figured she’d rat him out to her Uncle Paul.

“Glad you’re able to relax with a ton of that reeking stuff parked in the front yard.” Don blinked and shoved his glasses up his nose, forcing his eyes away from her long legs stretched across the scarred desktop. Just once, he wished, she’d have a little decorum and wear slacks to work. “Do you have plans to do something with it?”

“Mon ami, you make too much of small things.” Claudette crossed one knee over the other and didn’t bother to tug down her short red skirt. Don swallowed hard. She sniffed again and held her hand at arm’s length, inspecting her nails. That irritating, hoity-toity attitude of hers had to go. “Plus, you exaggerate. I simply checked one of the little boxes on the form and mailed it to the supplier. He obviously made the mistake, if what you say is truth.”

He slapped the side of the desk to get her undivided attention. Right then he’d do anything to erase the image of those well toned calves wrapped around his neck. Dammit, why were French women so sexy?

“No, doll, there’s literally a ton of cow dung right out there on the circular drive.” He hooked a thumb over his shoulder, his other hand nudging her legs aside to grab a sheaf of papers. “I don’t know what the hell you ordered, but that’s what you got. So what’s your plan, baby? I happen to have a shovel in your size.”

Her chair skated back, just short of hitting the bookcase. Gritting her teeth, she tossed the little glass nail file she’d been using onto a stack of papers and stood.

“Do not treat me like a stupid woman—.” Cheeks flaming, she got right into his face. “Or your wife.”

“One, you’re not stupid. You only like to pretend you are.” He ticked the points off the fingers on his free hand. “Two, thank God I don’t have a wife. With my bad luck, she might have been just like you.”

She glared at him for one intense second before she jerked the order form from his hand.

“You, monsieur, need to be taught manners.”

“You, mademoiselle, need a good spanking.”

A coy smile tweaked the corners of her pouty, full lips. “That may be so, you uptight Américain, but this is not the time to discuss my sexual preferences.”

CONTEST:
Time for Trivia! From June 7th through June 21st a trivia contest will captivate your minds. There are ten random questions about the book. For every questionnaire turned into Phoenix Forrester at prp_phoenix@yahoo.com you will gain five (5) entries into the drawing for a $25.00 Gift Card to Bath & Body Works along with a bag of free goodies.

Reader Gold –Give me a Series/Serials to love

I’ve been reading a lot lately and I love series/serials so I have been rereading my favs. I’ve written a few times on my own blog about my love of series and serials. What they are and how I feel about them. Almost monthly there are so many books coming that are part of a series/serial.

First here are my definitions of them both:

Series ~ Taige Crenshaw Definition:

Novels that has a related story theme but each one is complete in and of itself.

Serial ~ Taige Crenshaw Definition:

Novels that feature/follows the same main character/s yet are still a fresh story each time.

No matter which way you slice it I find whether it is a serial or series I enjoy reading and writing stories that are series. I’m one of those readers that wondered what is next for such and such main character. Or what happened to this sub - character that I liked in this or that novel. I go hunting to find more and when I find it I feel like I’ve struck READER’S GOLD. I jump up and down and shout in glee. LOL.

I’ve been known to search for years to get that book to complete a series/serial I was reading. Hey I’m a dedicated reader and I want the complete set of my series/serial.

My bookshelf’s (online and print) are filled with authors who have some wonderful series/serials that I feel are Reader’s Gold. I’m sure most of you have a little Reader’s Gold on your bookshelf so come on and share. Give me some new Reader’s Gold to find.

Who are some author’s that are your Reader’s Gold and why?

DID YOU SURVIVE FREAKY FRIDAY?

Ever wonder how we got to this - the superstitious Friday the Thirteenth syndrome of paranoia and fear, also known as "phobia?"

Yesterday I'd been out shopping and running errands all day with nary a thought about the date until late afternoon. I have no superstitions attached to days like this. I don't avoid stepping on cracks or walking under ladders - unless there's a can of paint perched perilously on top, and I'd love to have a black cat cross my path today or any day. And you won't see me throwing salt over my shoulder if I spill it.

I wouldn't refuse to sign a book contract on a Friday the Thirteenth. And I think it's ridiculous for hotels to avoid having a 13th floor. So they label as #14 the floor after #12. It's still the 13th floor. Do they think we're idiots? Or just irrational?

Historically, Friday and the number thirteen have separately been looked at askance or considered lucky, depending on the culture and the age. During the years of the Pharoahs, thirteen was considered lucky because it symbolized the afterlife.

On the flip side, according to one reference, apparently the ancients could only count to twelve. Thirteen to them, because it signified the unknown, may have seemed dangerous. Thirteen for us may be troubling because it's irregular, while twelve is considered a "complete" number.

Friday the 13th makes people nervous in most countries of the world, but in Greece and Romania it's Tuesday the 13th that's considered a bad ass. In the Spanish-speaking countries, it's Friday the 17th that makes them nervous.

The Hindus considered it unlucky to seat thirteen at a table. The Vikings, too. They believed that at a banquet where a thirteenth, uninvited god showed up, one of the gods died. Think about it: Jesus became number thirteen when he dined with his twelve disciples, and when one of them betrayed him, he died. Unlucky? Or Divine Plan?

Some people believe Friday and the thirteenth hooked up because Jesus was crucified on a Friday. Although some would see this as unlucky, Christians call it "Good" Friday. Fact is, Christ died on the 14th day of Nissan by the Hebrew Lunar Calendar, and this doesn't correspond with a Friday on the Roman Solar Calendar.

Others believe this connection making Friday and the Thirteenth unlucky reaches back to October 13, 1307, when the Knights Templar were rounded up, arrested and tortured.

In 1925, a book on popular superstitions listed it as the most prevalent one among Americans. Wonder if it still is, or whether science has alleviated some of our fears. Of course, phobias aren't rational, so maybe science hasn't helped.

My phobias don't happen to involve Fridays falling on the thirteenth of the month. I hope you survived yours yesterday.

Superheroes with Sizzle!

With all the superhero movies coming out, I thought I would drop in and let you guys get a taste of a superhero erotic tale. This book was inspired by my thoughts of what if... What if a superhero fell for a villian? How would that work? Could it work? I think it does. After all, a villian is the ultimate bad boy. And who doesn't love a bad boy?

Soundwave's Surrender

Blurb:
Soundwave is a Super who can bring down any man with her voice alone. Too bad she hasn’t been able to bring down General Pane. But now he’s on the run and she has a score to settle. And she’s going to make sure he pays up.

General Pane has a score of his own to settle. After all, it’s Soundwave’s fault he’s being hunted. He’s lost his job, his identity, and if he’s not careful his life could be next. With Soundwave firmly in his grasp, he’ll stop at nothing to make her pay. Even if he has to tie her up and gag her.

Excerpt:

He bent and scooped up Soundwave’s limp body, then threw her over his shoulder. Her slight grunt broke the surrounding silence. Refusing to tempt fate, he set her down. If he couldn’t count on her staying knocked out he’d have to stop her from using her powers. He stripped his battle armor off then tore the cotton shirt he wore below it. With deft fingers he rolled a piece of it into a ball and twisted it inside a gag. He tied it around her mouth. No way would she be able to emit any sound waves around that. Deciding to hedge his bets, he bound her wrists and ankles.

After lifting her up again he sprinted away from the area at a fast clip. As he ran he analyzed their surroundings. He needed to find a cave. Preferably something easily defendable in case they were found.

It took ten more minutes for him to find a decent spot. The cave was up about a hundred feet and its opening was naturally in the shadows. The human eye would glance right over it. Not the best solution, but it would have to do.

Normally it would’ve been a short climb but with her extra weight it took almost twice as long. When he finally deposited her just inside the cool dark opening, he dropped to the ground in exhaustion. Sweat rolled down tired muscles.

Using the metal of his belt, he held her near the rocks jutting from the ceiling of the cave. His nanites fused with the soft metal and attached to the ceiling. He repeated the process with the floor. She made a beautiful X.
This was going to be a long night… for her. They needed the essentials before they played. Water and food were a must. Surveying the cave he honed in on a small trickle of water running down the back wall. There must be a stream nearby. That took care of water, now food.

“Hmmmm.”

She was waking up. Food would have to wait. He moved to the shadowed side of the cave, just out of her eyesight. It wasn’t until he was almost a hair’s breadth away from her that he stepped into sight.

Her eyes widened and then narrowed. He heard her sharp intake of breath as she strained against the gag.

“Sorry, sweetheart. Can’t have you using that mouth of yours on me.” At least, not in the way she wanted.

She moaned against the gag but stopped straining to get away. Okay. His nanites indicated she wasn’t seriously hurt, but they could be wrong. It wasn’t like they did an internal diagnostic on her.

“Are you hurt? And before you answer, I won’t be untying your hands or the gag. If you say you’re hurt I’ll be examining you myself.” He held up his hands to her face. There was no mistaking the way she yanked away from him. “Don’t pull away from me.” He dipped a finger down the side of her body just glancing over her breast and hips. “I’ve got nothing left to lose.”

He’d lost the war, his job, his identity, and if he wasn’t careful his life would be next. But not before he tasted her. In every sense. In every way. “First things first. Let’s get those ripped clothes off.” He held up one finger. A slight buzzing hummed through his hand as the nanites changed the angle and composition of his flesh. His finger stretched and slimmed. A thin silver blade now protruded from his finger -- almost two inches long and sharper than any blade.

* * * * *
Slipping his razor-sharp finger beneath the tattered shoulder of her form-fitting blue top, he slowly cut through the material. She expected the blade to be cold, but it was hot. It cut through the material like a fired metal through cool cream. He slashed down one side then the other, then along the top until two halves fell from her body.

Her breasts sprang free. A cool breeze whispered through the cave making her nipples bead up into tight buds. Why in the galaxy had she risked her life to save him? The bastard hadn’t wasted any time in taking advantage.

“The first time I caught you were so hairy I had to shave you. Is it bare for me?”

Territorial Rights...

The mallard’s glossy green iridescent head and neck pointed into the wind. He went across the pond with such speed the wake splashed onto the rocks…

As a romance author, I’m always searching for ways to make my craft fresh. In the fall of last year my family moved from the suburbs to the country. At first the quiet was freaky, at night the only sounds were the frogs, bird calls (I don’t know enough yet to tell you which birds were passionate about their nighttime chat), and the ever present crickets.

Unlike the rest of my family, I’m a morning person. I brew a pot of tea, take my cup and sit on the deck. I bundle into warm sweaters if necessary. The fog lifting off the ground wasn’t new to me because I’m a jogger, so I’m up early to hit the pavement. What is new to me, the wildlife.

As I sit in a comfortable chair, I watch the morning’s antics of animals associated to country life. I’d witness deer standing on the ridge at the back of the property…never just one, but a herd. An elegant gray wolf, not a coyote as I know the difference, appeared in the corn field to the east. He loped across, stopping occasionally to glance in my direction.

Ducks drew my attention because they stayed for the longest amount of time. A simple couple, the glorious male duck sported a gleaming aristocratic head. He checked out the pond by circling around and then flew from the bank into the water.
A few minutes later the female, obvious by her plain brown coat with a sprinkle of white, followed sliding beside him like an airliner landing on the concourse. His bill reached and ruffled her feathers. She could have cooed, she certainly didn’t squawk, and snuggled beside him. They floated from end to end, skirting the water’s edge.

They appeared to be a couple and from research I’ve found mallards mate and are monogamous, most of the time. I wondered why the male was so beautiful with his colors and the female smaller and oak brown. He certainly had arrogance about him. I assumed because they were the first ducks in existence. Other breeds came to pass from this lineage.

When two Canadian geese flew to the opposite side of the pond, I was thrilled. A new set of feathered friends had arrived for me to observe and see their mating practices and romantic gestures. They looked the same. How could I tell if they were both male or female or one of each?

Irrelevant as the arrogant small mallard rushed across the water, making an aggressive noise and clearly declaring the pond his turf. The large geese bellowed and continued to complain until the mallard got within inches of them. In a flash they took flight.

The noble mallard returned to his mate. They continued their ritual of bathing, feather mussing, and floating in the early morning sun.

Wildlife is fascinating, and the courtship of the two mallards sounds a lot like a human’s romance story, don’t you think?

What domestic or wildlife stories do you have to share?

Are the Chupacabra Real or Just a Legend?

Kidnapped, seduced, and stalked in a perilous jungle, is it possible for a woman to find love and protection in a man's arms, or is she prey to the Chupacabra?

Savage Seduction
ISBN:1-60180-063-0

Angelina Barlow doesn’t like being told what to do, even by a handsome man stealing her plane. Overpowered by him and his sidekick, she’s left no choice, and ends up in a doomed flight from Texas that crashes south of the border. However, her predicament isn’t as perilous as the attraction she has for the dangerously sexy man kidnapping her.

Desiderio “Dez” Chavez is on a mission to steal the daughter of a powerful rancher. When Dez inadvertently ends up with the wrong girl, he’s in more trouble than thievery or kidnapping could get him. The gorgeous young blonde stimulates a primitive ache in his loins that he can’t and he doesn’t ignore.

As they travel together in the lush beauty of the Mexican jungle, fighting their feelings, yet giving into sexual desire, an emotional bond is created. And what started as a savage seduction becomes a mutual and sacred awakening of their love-starved spirits. It’s this mysterious connection that presents a new threat to Angelina’s wellbeing.

The Chupacabras are gruesome, blood-sucking beasts and they want the woman Dez has claimed for himself. Can he protect his Angel from a fate worse than death, and if so, will she still want him when she learns the secrets he keeps about the legendary creatures?

Feel Like a Fling?

My short story, Fijian Fling, has been released in print as part of the Sand, Sun and Sex anthology. I'm in there with some other great authors, including Jennifer Colgan, Michelle Cary and Beth Williamson. So if you feel like a red hot fling this summer, check out this great book!

Passion as dazzling as a mirage—and hot enough to melt sand!

A Midsummer Night’s Steam Anthology

Marielle’s Marshal by Beth Williamson - An outspoken school teacher and a hard-nosed lawman are forced to rely on each other to survive in the wilderness. On the trek through the barren landscape, they discover desire hotter than the desert sand.

La Mirage by Jennifer Colgan - Stranded by engine trouble in the middle of the desert, Savanna and Ben stumble upon a mysteriously beautiful resort. Is this place—and their newfound passion—real? Or only a trick of the summer heat?

Fijian Fling by Sami Lee - Sophie has come to her favorite island to re-evaluate her life. There she meets enigmatic and lethally sexy Nick. Their fling could turn into something more, but the secrets he keeps could be a deal-breaker.

Beyond The Tears by Michelle Cary - Cassie, a widower, is in Key West for a week to escape her lingering grief, not to bed hop. But her private session of self-pleasuring in a Jacuzzi had a witness—Chase, the hottest stud at the hotel.

Warning: Explicit sex, graphic language, violence

Fijian Fling has received some great reviews:

Sami Lee’s FIJIAN FLING is the perfect summer romance story. It will keep you paging down the screens… This is one of my favorites from the MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S STEAM collection. I highly recommend it.

The Chicklit Genre

My new release, Meeting Mr. Right Online, has been labeled Chicklit. I’m sure there are some of you out there wondering what exactly chick-lit is. So, here’s a short little lesson for you.

Chick-lit is primarily about young women in their 20’s or 30’s dealing with life (newer titles are also including older women as well that of differing ethnicities). It contains a light, humorous and most importantly a confiding tone—like you’re speaking to your girlfriends—almost always in the first person. The themes focus around love, relationships, friendships, professional dilemmas, and a penchant for fashion—typically facing hilarious and embarrassing situations. But what it all comes down to is the heroine figuring out herself and what she really wants out of life. There is usually some kind of epiphany that blows her mind away and finally she can see clearly about what she really wants—or more importantly—needs.

Chicklit is a completely different genre from romance because the focus is on the woman and how she navigates her way through the twists and turns life throws at her. But the romantic angle is generally at the forefront of the story. Another things about chicklit is that it does not always end in a happily ever after for the heroine and her love interest. Now I am an HEA girl all the way, so never fear, mine is very romantic and sweet and ends with an HEA.

Here is the blurb from my Chicklit story, Meeting Mr. Right Online. Available now from By Grace Publishing ($1.49).

What’s a girl to do when she’s thirty-three and all her friends have started their lives and left her behind?

Lucinda Kelley works for a local cable television show, assists her sister in her tumultuous relationships, and yearns for the day she can meet Mr. Right. All that seems to change when she meets Londoner Julian Crawford in an on-line TV chat room. Eight months later, via email he has become her best friend and closest confidant. Then one day the messages cease, and Lucinda feels lost until she makes a vow to end this infatuation with someone she has never met and move on to something real. When an alarming revelation is exposed, it could be Lucinda’s undoing or it might be exactly what she was looking for.
